|
"Pop," now, that sounds young and hip! Not all scientific-like.

19. ...And it's a scientific fact that "Pop" is used by Far Right-Wing ... |
|
...Republicans...such as "those people" in MinneSODA"
Actually I lived in Minnesota for 7 years (from California) but the first day I was there, a waitress asked me if I would like a Pop... and I thought she meant a Pop-Tart. I assumed that (maybe) pop was short for pop-tart.

Hardly! Pop is a midwestern expression, coke more of a south or lower southern plains expression, soda (or sometimes tonic) is in the north, and occasionally in California, I hear the word "beverage." When I'm in the south or in Texas, I say coke, but as I live the heart of the midwest (illinois), I say pop.
This reminds me of the expression dinner or lunch, dinner or supper?

31. Dinner at noon, supper in the evening. Lunch is a small meal |
|
before or after dinner, or late night after supper.
At least that's what the old time Western Minnesota farmers would tell you:
Breakfast Forenoon's lunch Dinner Afternoon's lunch Supper
I eat supper in the evenings. Dinner is something you "go out to" or serve midday on Sundays and holidays.

Bluejazz is just from a region that doesn't call it "pop".
It happens to be called "pop" at least 50% of the time here in Oregon. I call it "soda pop" because I used to live in a place where it's called "soda".

"Pop" seems to be the predominant term here. It's used like "deer", by the way--no plural. "Special this week--six pop for $2!" Weird, huh?
Same with beer: "I drunk twelve beer in an hour last night..."

soft drink is any pop or non-alcoholic beverage.

44. It's "soda" in NY and "pop" in Ohio so I was in for a |
|
cultural shock when I moved back to NYC as an adult having grown up in Ohio with "pop".
In Ohio, "soda" means club soda or a fountain drink that mixes ice cream with a corbonated beverage.
I say "soda" easily now, but it took awhile to readjust. (I still kind of prefer "pop." :)

it's a "cold drink", or just "Coke". Both terms are generic for soda pop of any flavor/brand. "Coke", for instance could very well be a 7-Up or a root beer or any other soda pop.
