What is proper ettiquette for applying lipstick in public?
There was a conversation here yesterday about proper ettiquette regarding Jenna applying her lip gloss in public yesterday.

So what I did was went to the experts, you can ask these folks anything.

Dear Ms. Notadmblnd,

The proper etiquette for applying lipstick in public is DON'T! Any grooming, such as combing or brushing hair, cleaning teeth and applying make-up should be taken care of in the ladies' room or in private, never at a table or in front of others.

Thank you for writing.

Best regards,

2. It's not appropriate to apply lipstick at the table, or in public.
One retreats to the restroom for touching up.

3. Her daddy picks his nose in public.
Open-mouthed yawning, sticking out tongue at the press, nose picking, spitting gum into hand, flipping-off the camera, spitting ice cubes into glass, cleaning glasses on stranger's jacket, etc. All in a days work if you're 'murikan royalty. Hiding their class is one thing the ** klan excels at.

4. I beg to differ...
They're not "hiding" their class - they don't have any. Period.

5. When the whole world is looking at you
And every news outlet, major or minor, has you in their camera's eyes, don't apply lipstick.

6. You don't. And it's a definite NO NO at formal/public events.

It's very much of a come on down boys type of thing- best reserved for the ladies room or the boudoir ;)

Unless you're deliberately trying to turn someone on, you just don't do that in public. Of course, maybe Jenna was interested in the cameramen

7. You should be driving an H2 or other large SUV
Well, at least that's the tendency of the Stepford Wives here in Dallas/Fort Worth.

And from what I have experienced while driving around here, it's also okay to read, eat, talk on a cellphone, apply eyeliner, blush, mascara, put on false eyelashes and shave.

9. I know but I do it at the table anyway.
Call me classless but I don't care. It only takes a couple of seconds.

10. Etiquette differs for formal occasions
There are times, at casual events, like say, maybe a baseball game, when sure, you can get away with combing your hair or putting on chapstick. At any kind of formal occasion, you do not whip out the dental floss, the war paint, or pick your undies out of your crack. You go into a private place, preferably the restroom, to take care of those things.

It shows an utter contempt for the occasion and the people around you to ignore that bit of commonly-accepted etiquette. It's indicative of complete self-absorption. "I'm going to do what I feel like doing, and none of you are important enough for me to worry whether or not this is rude or offensive. This occasion is so dull to me that I'm going to fiddle with my makeup instead."

Granted, applying lipstick is less repulsive than, for example, clipping your toenails in public. But the rule is, one does not groom oneself publicly. My mother was death on that, particularly people who comb their hair in public (she especially hated people who did it IN RESTAURANTS, because it was disgusting to get someone else's hair on your food, which it is. I don't want ANYTHING that came off someone else's body in my food).
