4. Didn't it end in the early thirties though?
Or do you mean, a film about prohibition made between 30-50?

5. Yeah
I have to write a research paper about a film dealing directly with a social issue and its reception. I'm time limited because my class deals with the times roughly about 1930 to 1959 I believe.

9. The Untouchables was made in 87 so that's out
thanks anyway. hmmm, maybe I should find another issue. There's the Korean War, The Marshall Plan, the Japanese internment, the bombing of HIroshima/Nagasaki. I don't know of any films dealing with those though.

26. A good Korean War movie is Pork Chop Hill
with Gregory Peck. It was made in '58 or '59 I think. It's surprising realistic and honest for the time it was made. It's about an actual assault on a hill in the closing days of the war that was done mainly to give the peace negotiators an edge at the negotiations. In other words, thousands of people died in a political game of chicken. It's worth watching.

10. Check out "Millers Crossing"
A little film by the Cohen Bros.

One of the better of the mob genre, and has some great dialog and acting.

Go grab it, and don't let anyone "give you the high hat" while your doing it!

12. Miller's Crossing is one of the best movies I have ever seen...
I love that, it has to do more with gambling though.

11. Some Like It Hot
was released in 1959 but is set in the 1920s. Prohibition is a major part of the plot: the main characters have to go underground because they witness a gangland execution that is based on the St. Valentine's Day massacre.

18. Paper Moon
One Hell of a movie and a great insight into the trading of illegal alcohol. It is a comedy and the central theme isn't prohibition but the message is very loud and very clear.

19. The Petrified Forest
Edited on Mon Jan-24-05 03:45 PM by Benhurst
On second thought, the crime in this flick is probably more an outgrowth of the times than directly related to Prohibition itslef. It's been a long time since I saw it; but it's worth watching, nevertheless. Humphrey Bogart and Bette Davis. What more do you want?

The Roaring Twenties -- a bit of a stretch, but still important

The St. Valentine's Day Massacre (had to compress the link from IMDB -- it was HUGE!)

Enjoy the film; it's classic film noir and spot on.

It starts during prohibition, and also goes through the depression. Like I said, its a comedy.
