1. if it is on a website
right click the picture, and highlight where the web address is at the top. Use control-c to copy it, then go to where you want it such as on your DU message. Click control-v to paste it there. Use the preview button to make sure it shows up. Some websites don't allow it. Hope this makes sense.

2. With a PC you right-click on the pic and choose properties...
Then you highlight the URL and copy it and paste it in your post.

9. No right click on Mac
Edited on Mon Jan-24-05 03:52 PM by Nicole
Just hold your mouse's arrow over the image & click. A pop up box will ask if you want to view image, copy image location, email image, save image or check image properties.

If you choose view image, the image will open in the window & you can copy the url from there. Then paste it where you want it.

Not all places let you link to their images so it's better to save it, load it elsewhere & then paste it here or wherever you want to post it.

3. The legit way is to link to pictures
on a server you pay for (your own website) or one of those that are free hosting sites. Linking in pictures hosted on others' websites uses their bandwidth and costs them money (in theory).

If you hit reply to this post you should see the code I used to insert this image. Just change the last part to the name of whichever picture (on that page) you want to link in. And, to be clear, you don't have to actually reply, just hit reply and you will see the code (not the picture). This is true for smilies also. :toast:

edit: my bad. that doesn't work

this ishe code (take out the spaces)

6. The way I learned is thusly:
Right click on the picture, 'save picture as' and save it to your personal computer. Sign up at some picture hosting (I like photobucket) http://photobucket.com. Then follow the directions of the picture hosting site. Then post a link. I did the cartoon characters the R/W seems to love to hate, and my ALL TIME favorite!

16. I'm not sure I understand you
what do you mean by you are typing in url? You shouldn't have to type anything.

If you do the steps I told you above, when the image opens in the window, place your cursor in the box at the top of your browser that shows the url address. Highlight it by clicking the mouse. Go to edit, on the left top of your computer & click on copy.
Then when you get where you want the image pasted, click edit again & click on paste.

I couldn't tell you how to do it with a Mac mouse.

On my PC I right clicked on the image, went to properties, highlighted the image's URL, right clicked on it again, copied the link and pasted it in the message section where you write a post on DU.

17. I'm no moderator, but it is against DU rules to 'borrow' bandwidth…
…by linking to images on other sites. (see end of post)
The photobucket method is far more desirable.

From the DU rules:
=========
"Do not steal someone else's bandwidth by posting images that are hosted on another website. Democratic Underground is a high-traffic website, so posting images from other sites will cause their server load to increase dramatically, and might even cost the website owner money. If you wish to post an image from another website, you must contact the owner of the other website to get their consent.

If you post copyrighted images, always post the source of the image."
