Name your "WTF" Oscar moments.
This can be someone (or a film) that won or was robbed.

Mine, Glenda Jackson "A Touch of Class" over Barbra Streisand "The Way We Were".

Hitchcock never winning.

Richard Burton never winning.

Cher not getting nominated for "Mask". I was thrilled when she won for "Moonstruck"! One of my favorite all time movies.

1. I wasn't alive in 1950, but I am nonetheless up in arms
about Gloria Swanson not being named Best Actress for her role as Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard. Judy Holliday is great in Born Yesterday, but Gloria ...

Anyway, I have total deja vu now, because I post this rant every year around the Oscars.:D

Add also Judy Garland losing to Grace Kelly. "A Star is Born" is a classic and Judy was robbed.

Especially since, given the Academy's bent about Woody Allen, they gave it to him strictly to avoid giving it to Star Wars.

45. Yeah
See, the thing is, in 1978 Star Wars was more than just a great film. It was a fundamental change to the way that films are made, and that deserved to be recognized. But also at that time, science fiction (according to the "prevailing wisdom") was only for geeky 14 year old boys.

15. that one flabbergasted me
Gwyneth was actually quite good in Shakespeare in Love, but Elizabeth was the first thing I'd seen Blanchett in, and there wasn't a single moment where she was onscreen (and she was onscreen for most of the movie) where it was possible to turn your eyes away from her. It was an amazingly compelling performance, and showed a range of acting that was about 1000 times broader than Gwyneth's.

I can think right off the bat of two roles Burton should have won: "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" (he was every bit the equal of Elizabeth Taylor) and "Equus"

O'Toole won an honorary Oscar. But, god. "Lawrence of Arabia"? "The Lion in Winter" "My Favorite Year"? Great, great performances all...and nothing.

21. Roberto Begnini winning Best Actor
The competition that year included Ian McKellen in "Gods and Monsters," Nick Nolte in "Affliction" and Edward Norton in "American History X." Can't remember the 4th nominee, but after Begnini made an ass of himself, the three aforementioned nominees headed to the bar and apparently toasted each other and had a good laugh that people had given an Oscar to such a collossal dork. (Best Foreign Film was one thing, but come on!)

Geoffrey Rush should've been up for Supporting Actor the year he won, with Tom Cruise winning for "Jerry Maguire." Denzel Washington should've won Best actor for "Malcolm X," not Pacino for "Scent of a Woman." (Pacino should've won for "Dog Day Afternoon.") Michelle Pfeiffer should've won Best Actress for "The Fabulous Baker Boys," over Jessica Tandy in "Driving Miss Daisy."

Oh, this could go on and on--check out Danny Perry (Peary?)'s book "Alternate Oscars, where he corrects a lot of Oscar goofs (including people and films that weren't even NOMINATED).

But Marissa was up against some big names:

1992 (65th)
ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Judy Davis -- Husbands and Wives {"Sally"}
Joan Plowright -- Enchanted April {"Mrs. Fisher"}
Vanessa Redgrave -- Howards End {"Ruth Wilcox"}
Miranda Richardson -- Damage {"Ingrid"}
* Marisa Tomei -- My Cousin Vinny {"Mona Lisa Vito"}

I think is was a cause of the vote being split up with the dramatic roles and a comedy performance winning .

;)

Don't get me wrong--I would never say he isn't 'entertaining.' He's funny, charming and talented. I just don't feel he is an 'actor' as much as he is a personality. Some of the film folks have capitalized on that--and he is now a bankable film star. It just bugs me when I know how long and hard many young actors struggle to make it in the industry--then this rap artist comes along and gets a show, then films, then STARDOM! (sigh)

I know I sound like an acting snob--just ignore me. LOL!

Now, does anyone know if this was also around the time that J. Wayne was diagnosed with cancer? I seem to recall hearing a weird rumour that people thought he may die soon, and didn't have BA Oscar. So that was maybe part of why he got the Oscar in the category when he wasn't really the fave that year. You know how the Academy sometimes will play the pity card (among other things), so I thought it may be true--

Didn't he pass way YEARS later?

I liked John Wayne, but "True Grit" really wasn't his best performance.

John Wayne {d. Jun 11, 1979}
1949 (22nd) ACTOR -- Sands of Iwo Jima {"Sergeant John M. Stryker"}
1960 (33rd) BEST MOTION PICTURE -- The Alamo
1969 (42nd) * ACTOR -- True Grit {"Rooster Cogburn"}

On edit: I located his other nominations. He did die ten years after winning for "True Grit", so he could have been in the early stages of cancer.

He died so much later than the Oscar for True Grit. Sure, it's possible he was in early diagnosis. But it does seem like a looong time, doesn't it?

I'm guessing the rumour was started by someone that agreed that it wasn't his best performance. LOL! Shame too, as it was a great performance for Hoffman.

edited to add--not to make light of Wayne's accomplishment. I don't want to upset or offend any of his fans that may be reading this. :)

Sally Field winning twice is like giving Robert Hughes the Olympic Gold Medal for the 100 meter sprint.

64. That's because people misunderstand what the award is for.
I've come to realize that it's not always for acting--more often it's for effect on the film or "unforgettableness" from the movie. Someone who stands out. So in that way, since everyone started saying "show me the money", Cuba Gooding deserved the win.

That's why Judi Dench won for 8 minutes of film in "Shakespeare in Love".

Had Captain Jack Sparrow been a lesser character in "Pirates of the Carribbean", Johnny Depp would have an Oscar right now.

I can't really argue with Kevin Spacey getting best supporting actor for The Usual Suspects over Brad Pitt in 12 Monkeys, but Brad was very good in that movie. And as I think about it Kevin Spacey should have been in the Best Acting category.

But Lemmon was such a great actor - one of the great, truly "natural" actors - that I think he was given an Oscar more for a complete body of work.

Now, I am not knocking Randy Newman overall. His score for Ragtime was great and he's written some great songs and film scores during his career.

But it seems like every year, he gets nominated for one of those sappy soundalike songs off a Pixar movie. I think the Academy voted for him just so people would stop nominating him.

All four times!!!

1937, "Stella Dallas" she was robbed
1941, "Ball of Fire" robbed again
1944, "Double Indemnity" BEATEN and robbed
1948, "Sorry Wrong Number" ...ok she didn't stand a chance against Jane Wyman "Johnny Belinda" was brilliant--Wyman won without uttering a word.

The Oscar's Stany COULD have won had she had better luck...

"Mildred Pierce"...Curtiz wanted Stanwyck for the part but Crawford begged to test for it and won Curtiz over. Crawford got the Oscar.

"The Fountainhead" Stanwyck brought the novel to Jack Warner's attention. He bought the rights to the book, and behind Stanwyck's back, cast an unknown Patricia Neal--thus forever severing Stanwyck's association with WB Studios. Patricia Neal got the Oscar.

I wasn't around in 1957, but the fact that Paths of Glory was not even nominated that year is almost unforgivable. It demonstrated the overwhelming political cowardice of the Academy.

I'm also inclined to say that Dr. Strangelove should have beaten My Fair Lady for Best Picture, but that may be a reflection of my personal preferences in films.

92. That scene was one of the most devastating that I've ever seen
It's burned into my memory so vividly.

Like you say, the men at first are laughing and raunchy as they drag in the refugee, then she starts singing this sweet, maudlin German folk song. It sounds like something a mother might sing to her baby. It sounds like home. Gradually the soldiers become somber. They're looking around at each other, filthy and bandaged with grievous injuries. They seem to realize that a lot more of them will die before this is over, and nothing can save them. The bureaucracy is shallow and arbitrary, and there is no justice to be found here. They start humming along with the melody, faces red, trembling, tears streaking down their faces. In a few minutes, they have to go back.
