Wow: Folk Songs to Bug the Liberals - crazy throwback stuff...
I was browsing the internet (like you do) and looking for something (nevermind what) when I found this crazy little page where you can listen to the tracks from an album pressed in the way back when...

The Goldwaters Sing Folk Songs to Bug the Liberals (1964)

All along the left-hand side you can listen to *.ram files of the tracks on the album, consisting of:
Intro: The Goldwaters!
What Have You Done
Win In '64
Goldwaters Banter #1
Down In Havana
Goldwaters Banter #2
It's Over Now
Rejected Song
Row Our Boat
Bobby, Bobby
Goldwaters Banter #3
White House Goodbye
Barry's Moving In
The End Of The Monkey
Farewell Serenade
Goldwaters Banter #4
The Campaign Trail

I think this quote from the interview sums it up best:
"Ken Crook, the lead singer for The Goldwaters, took exception to CONELRAD's posted assessment of his former combo. 'Our album wasn't 'nearly' unlistenable,' Crook wrote, 'it was completely unlistenable.'"

Go - listen - and (hopefully) laugh. :)

2. I don't know who Bob Roberts is...
But this has to be far worse!

Not only are the lyrics bad, but the music is painful...

4. Then you MUST rent the movie!
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005OOQ2/qid=1106614243/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/103-7787590-1986218?v=glance&s=dvd

It's a Tim Robbins movie about a folk-singing, extremely evil republican. It was made about 10 years ago, and is more disturbing now than it was then (because it seems completely plausible).

Interesting trivia: Robbins refused to release a soundtrack for the movie because he didn't want wingnuts "adopting" the wingnut folk songs he wrote/sang in the film.

6. How did I miss this?
It's going down in "the book" so I won't forget to watch it.

Thanks! I will get it this weekend and watch it with my movie friends.

7. Doesn't it end with Roberts in a wheelchair,
singing a song? The camera moves in on his leg and he's tapping his foot?

I haven't seen that film in years, but I remember it ending somewhat like that.

3. It is a tribute to the unity of our country that we are all annoyed by...
folksongs these days, regardless of political orientation. The wounds have healed!

8. I liked the followup to "Barry's Moving In,"
called "Barry Got His Ass Handed To Him By LBJ."

9. That pretty much squashed the Goldwaters career right there

The horrible music didn't have anything to do with it.

Really.

Edit: can't frickin' spel.

12. No, but it sounds funny.
I wonder what sort of songs they'd sing...

13. My parents had this album...
and they passed it on to me a couple of years ago! Haven't actually listened to it, yet, though (need to get a working turntable)... but I remember from "way back when" that "Win In '64" included: "Barry's gonna win in '64, the New Frontier will be no more... Barry's gonna wi-in, win in '64!" ... and the Bobby song (addressing RFK as Attorney General) goes: "Bobby, Bobby, I've been thinkin', when you studied for the Bar... Did you read the Constitution... Did you ever get that far?" My parents also had a can of a soft drink called "Gold Water." Sadly, compared to most of the dildoes my parents have supported since 1964, Barry looks pretty good! I mean, at least he was the kind of conservative who believed the government should stay out of people's private lives. What did he say about gays in the military.... something like, "All I care is that a soldier can SHOOT straight!" Unfortunately, Barry's opposition to the Civil Rights Act was one of his less stellar moments... and it was what prompted my parents to change from Democratic to Republican. Such a proud moment in Republican history... when the party of Lincoln decided to oppose civil rights in order to attract bigots like my Dixiecrat parents. (And that strategy is still working...)
