Would you let your daughter wear this prom dress?
http://www.nypost.com/style/39213.htm

Yes, this is a PROM dress. For the PROM. Like for high school girls.

Just for the record . . . my answer is no.

I'm waiting for the toddler version though - it'll hit Target soon.

126. don't know if you saw this later but...
I had the same reaction at first, googled the designer mentioned and there it was! excite! .com or something like that. It does seem that the dress has been pinned or contorted to look a bit more skimpy in the article than the model on the actual website is wearing it. Shock value I guess.

Just a really bad designer IMO. LOL.

"I don't think any girl would wear this to a prom. She'd step on her dress on the dance floor and everything would just fall out!"

From the NY Post article.

Edited on Mon Jan-24-05 08:28 PM by Rabrrrrrr
Why even bother to dress at all, at that point? What's up with the slut look?

There's the practical problem - looks like something a whore would wear - but also the aesthetic one: it's an ugly design, cutwise, and the rhinestones or whatever they hell are look like shit.

Believe it or not, my sister tried to wear something similar (but not quite as revealing) to the prom and I thought my dad was going to kill her. She did not wear it.

Her boyfriend went shopping with her and picked it out, LOL. He always did have rocks for brains.

I'd let my daughter wear whatever she wanted to her prom. She'll learn that people judge women primarily on their appearance soon enough. She should at least have some fun before she understands the level of misogyny in the world.

41. I'd probably try to convince my daughter not to.
For me, as the mom of an almost 13 year old, it's all too real, and while she's still a minor, I feel as though I'd need to protect her to a large degree.

However, I like your answer nonetheless. It's hard to understand why society wants to marginalize and demonize female sexuality to the degree it does. There's nothing wrong with breasts or sexuality. Breasts are both functional and beautiful and why it's always such a "thing" with so many Americans is beyond me. It's not like that everywhere in the world.

44. No. We don't buy prom dresses at Frederick's Of Hollywood.
It looks like suspenders, as if there should be a blouse underneath.

I don't think ANYONE should wear that, no matter how "good" her body is.

And I'd make sure to teach her that a woman exists only for the sexual pleasure and gratification of men, and that she is not fulfilled as a woman unless a man is oggling her, fondling her, or making babies with her.

53. Well I thought I was permissive...
I know my oldest is prom ready, but females inherit chest size from daddies, then from grandmas, etc.

I know she would love to flaunt her treasures there...
But she has way too much "wiggle room" to wear something like that.

Sorry, but I am about 52 inches in the upper chest and my "little" girls are rapidly approaching and I am fearing that reduction surgery bill if it comes to that...

58. Dresses don't scream that, sociopathic, scummy males do.
The frighteningly still pervasive attitude in our culture that what a woman wears determines not only her character, but whether or not she will (or somehow deserves to) be raped is negating her humanity and value and a human being. No, I wouldn't wear that dress, but if I did (or my daughter did), it would not mean we were asking to be raped. :eyes:

90. Not disagreeing with your argument
But if I were a 17-year-old boy....and my date showed up in the outfit....I would be utterly convinced that I was getting laid that night. Hell, I'm 31 and if my date showed up in that outfit, I would be utterly convinced that I was getting laid that night.

A woman has every right to dress and behave exactly as she wants. But I try to remain grounded in reality and actions cause reactions. If you wear a dress like that, you have increased your odds expontentially of having your date try to dry hump you in the limo.

139. A women wearing a dress like that....
is obviously trying to convey an image of sexuality. However, an image alone does not constitute consent. Men are responsible for their behavior. Nothing justifies rape. Ever. It doesn't matter if she was drunk, her sexual history, or what she wore. That is my point (also the law). If someone can't understand that, I don't know how else to put it.

I have to admit that the blatant sex thing is just not appropriate to that age group, IMO. I can't help it--I know teens DO have sex and I know that looks are a huge deal even at that age, but that dress is just too icky for words, and I am probably a prude.

I also feel compelled to mention it is just an awful cut/design with horrid ketchup colored material and awful trim. That color is so bad I'm not sure ANY woman could wear it well.

About the only thing that has made me any more uncomfortable was that video of Jon Benet shimmying away in full makeup in front of a pageant crowd...

I'd let her wear the dress. My daughter will be 18 when her senior prom comes, so she'll be a legal adult.

She'd probably get so embarassed at the prom she'd come home early anyway.

It isn't worth getting estranged over. But I would really really really work hard to keep it from getting to that point. I certainly wouldn't pay for the dress. That alone would probably be enough to keep her from wearing it.

146. My thought upon seeing this picture
was "Oh look, another teenage trailer trash whore". Either that or a Messalina wannabe... not that I really think that she would know who Messalina was. That dress screams, "Get in line boys." My second thought was, "Damn, that's ugly."

I will give it one thing... judging from the waistband of the skirt... her butt-crack isn't showing. (That comment was heavy sarcasm if anyone didn't get it.) Of course then, I can't see how long the skirt is in this picture. It looks like a tight skirt - the cut around the hips and the beading decoration, not to mention the tasteless bodice, make it unlikely that it hangs in any other way than straight down. This means that it is slit, either up the side or up the back... and the slit is probably not a decorous to the knee type of slit. My guess is that it is in the back to match the decolletage in the front.

This is not a dress for a prom. On a teenage drag queen with the right attitude, maybe. If they lived somewhere more progressive than most places in North America. On a teenage girl... it just looks trashy.

Sorry about the rant but it will soon be dance festival season and I will be spending the next several months watching little seven-year olds in miniature slut costumes dancing to things like "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" and "Like a Virgin". Not to mention the teenagers who look like they should have a brass pole on stage with them. This particular issue has been my favourite windmill to tilt at for the last several years.

This prom dress is so skimpy, even the designer's CEO wouldn't let his teenage daughter wear it. But the dangerously revealing gown, prominently advertised in Seventeen Prom, YM Prom and Teen Prom, and on sale in a Midtown shop, is a top seller for the company this season.

"I was shocked when I first saw it, but now it's one of our top 20 dresses nationwide," says Nick Yeh, the CEO of Xcite, the Stafford, Texas, company that designed the dress and some 200 other styles this season.

156. Top seller for the company
The NYPost article says that this is the company's TOP SELLER. Expect lots of **think of the children*** stories from all around the country this spring.
