3. I was corporately repressed for four years at the last newspaper I worked
Because I confronted my editor in front of the other reporters after he gave a story I broke to another reporter. This so happened on the day he got promoted.
I've since quit that paper, vowing never to work for a daily newspaper again. I now write for various magazines and I am attending grad school

9. I just finished a 3,500 word article on immigration in arizona
And my last three articles before that were as follows: an international matchmaking service, christian rock music and female roller derby.

12. interesting...
i'm currently doing editorials for my school newspaper...i wish i could do uber-political ones every week but they want things that apply mostly to students/school...i'd have to learn to follow deadlines though

i would love to write for a political magazine or something...how'd you get into it?

13. You should write for DU
That way you can start building a portfolio of political clippings.
I graduated with a bachelors in journalism, then I did an internship. After that, it was a matter of paying my dues. My first full time journalism job was in Deming, New Mexico.
What, you never heard of it?
Neither did I until I heard they needed a reporter. Then I worked my way up to bigger papers until I finally landed a gig with the Arizona Republic, the 13th largest paper in the country. But as I learned, high circulation doesn't necessarily mean quality.
I covered mostly police and immigration issues throughout my career.

20. Those are good columns.
I especially liked the one about Chris. Anytime you can incorporate the human element in an article, as you did in that one, it makes it much more interesting to the average reader.

22. thanks
it's like a small business. You need to build clients, or in my case, magazines that assign me articles or buy the ones I propose to them.
I started out writing for magazines in Arizona because I was living there when I quit the newspaper. But now that I moved back to Miami, I still write for the Arizona magazines and I'm going to start writing for the local ones here.
Meanwhile, I'm in the process of talking to editors of a few national magazines.

8. Don't be a party pooper
sometimes copy cat threads get more responses than the original post that inspired them.

10. Party Pooper can't not be a party pooper
How is that for a double negative! Party pooping is implicit in Party Pooper's screenname!

17. Schizoaffective disorder
It's a combination of schizophrenia and manic-depression. I wouldn't even wish it on Bush. It now costs $350 a month to keep me sane.
