Most punishing things done to you as a child that were not punishments
but were things done for your own good. For me the first would be my mother taking it upon herself to back me up against a wall where she would squeeze my blackheads with her nails. For a while she tried using a Trim Comb on us. A Trim Comb was a thing sold on TV, that was a plastic comb with a razor blade inside. It didn't really cut your hair, it ripped it out.

1. They still advertise those - the ads are howlingly funny
Unintentionally, of course. The implication is that all kids are terrified to go to the barber's, but don't mind sitting still for hours while their mother rips their hair out piece by piece.

My mom used to spit on her finger and dab dirt off our faces when she noticed they were dirty and she didn't have access to a sink. Sadly, I found myself doing this to my kids when they were little. Must be a primitive impulse to lick your cubs clean.

9. Trim Combs are torture devices.
No one would ever use a Trim Comb on themselves.

"Go on, the other kids are out/doing it/wearing this..."

I love my mom. She always wants the best for me. She's the one who bought the fan magazines and the latest fashion rage (fishnets, popcorn shirts anyone?) for her dweeb daughter. I don't remember if she bought the clic clacs or if I did...

Edit: bookworM, not bookworK :wow:

6. Mother would lick her finger and "clean" my face in public.
I'm talking everything from milk mustaches to dirt smudges. She was doing this kind of stuff well into my teen years. Another later favorite move of hers was spit on her fingers to somehow "arrange" my hair. :eyes:

7. Forced "friendship" with a girl I couldn't stand
Just because our moms were best friends they thought we should be too.

She was a tomboy & I was a girly girl. She loved climbing trees & getting dirty. I preferred staying clean with Barbie.

forbid her son to see me for the entire summer break.

We had had a somewhat unfortunate (but entirely hilarious) prank go disastrously wrong on the final day of school.

That was the worst summer ever. I didn't think I'd ever see my friend again.

10. What was the prank?
My best friend taught me how to play "pass out" when I was ten. (Ten deep breaths and then squeeze) I was out. She thought I was faking. She let go. I fell and hit my head on the brick steps. Seven stitches. Our mothers still let us play together.

14. Well, the plan involved
stealing all the clothes from the gym locker room during the final period of the school year.

Needless to say, it didn't exactly go according to plan...

11. Haircuts at home can suck
I have really thick hair and mom used thinning sheers on me, but they were old and blunt and kind of just ripped the hair. Finally I refused to let her use them on me and just had a big old white-fro

13. You're damn right about haircuts at home when you're a kid
When I was young, I was always afraid of getting haircuts because when my Mom cut my hair, it always got in my eyes, and you know what it's like getting debris in your eyes (which were probably even more sensitive when I was young).

12. Made me go to Sunday School
I know my parents had the best intentions, but sending kids to a place where they are threatened with hellfire and eternal damnation unless they accept a certain belief and behave in a certain way is a traumatic experience.

I know that if the Mrs. and I have kids, any fool who dares to traumatize my children in this way will quickly find out that hellfire and damnation are the least of his worries!

15. Sending me to Bible Camp one summer
I was a pious little kid and the big kids would use all kinds of swear words and laugh at me when I objected. I guess it helped socialize me in a way and I got to use all the bad words much later when Nixon was elected.
