Taylor Hackford and Scorsese do not belong in the Best Director category -- direction SUCKED in both Ray & Aviator!! Best Actor OK, either one but Best Pic or Director, come on....Michael Moore was robbed IMO...
The one that gets my goat huge is giving Cate Blanchett a nom for her awful, scenery chewing, bad imitation of Kate Hepburn in Aviator. ARGH!! She was so terrible!

in the past: no win for "Taxi Driver", no win for "Raging Bull", no win for "Goodfellas". Winning "The Aviator" will be a sort of "make up" award for him.
I did not include "Gangs of New York" in the above for a good reason. It sucked.

Aviator falls under the category of "interesting failure with good lead perf" IMO -- Cate Blanchett was bloody awful.
