1. No rural dwellers?
AS for me, I like the city.

I hate having to pump my own water from a well.

3. I'm a rural dweller
I live in a village of about 350, and although I now have gravity fed spring water, I have lived without electricity and used a pump. It was fun.

19. I'm A Rural Person!
And I love it! The nearest "tiny town" has a population of 130, of which DH and I are part of. The nearest "Big Town" has a population of 1100. Big, Eh?

Oh and, we have an electric well pump that pumps water, the best in the world!

33. If you're actually going to farm
it's not a retirement activity and it's not like having a garden only bigger.

When I say I'd like to go back, I'm talking country living...not farming. I'm too old to work that hard for that little reward again.

30. Country for me.
Edited on Tue Jan-25-05 08:56 PM by Carson
I like the fact that my son doesn't use a bicycle lock or not being afraid to let him ride over to the playground.

I like not having traffic jams and smog.

I like *really* knowing the people in my community.

I like being able to step out onto my front porch and see thousands of stars, without the light pollution getting in the way.

I like the peacefulness that comes with barely any traffic and no bars or clubs around.

I can visit the city for entertainment, but I'll never live in one.

(edited for spelling)

2. Between 5 and 7 million here...
...depending how one measures the San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose metro area.

You did mean metro area, right? Otherwise, my oh-so-hum-drum suburban city is just a blip on the map at 26,000.

And you thought you were asking such a simple question. LOL

Edited on Tue Jan-25-05 06:45 PM by mcscajun
My town has about 6200 residents
County population is slightly under 500k
State population about 8.6 million

So — what's my answer? :)

14. It is interesting
Some political discussions don't end politely.

I don't ever say anything about gun control. ever.

At the polling place, the two Rethug observers were sitting there, and the poll workers were calling everyone's name out so they could check the list. I had some fun. I asked them who they represented, and they didn't say anything. A friend, who is one of the other 50 non-freepers, is one of the poll workers. When they ignored me the second time, she called out, rather loudly, "They're Republicans!" I mentioned to them that it was unfortunate they weren't working in Ohio, as they would each have been paid $ 100 for doing their "volunteer work" They didn't react.

Our son is a Junior in High School. He has been told, since he started kindergarten, that, as soon as he graduates, to not be surprised to see a for sale sign in front of the house. We are thinking of either Eugene Oregon, or Northern California. Not too much of a switch, heh?

12. I live in the 7 cities.....
In Virginia on the Peninsula, we have about 7 core cities, and 10 in with some more rural ones. We are the largest Metropolitan area with out a pro team in the country. All ten cities as one would make us about the size of LA I am told, and we voted Kerry this year!

I am pretty sure Kerry did well on the peninsula, but I should have looked closer at South-side numbers before talking in general about the area.

21. Half-hour on the freeway to nearest WalMart
Plus, we have the only stop light in the county. :) Three counties, actually. :D

Four churches, 2 liquor stores. One market, one hardware store, no home mail delivery. Only about half the town thinks it's weird when I go to the post office via dogsled. ;)

And, as a town, we went for Kerry.

36. It all depends
i live in the city of Denver a city of about 550000, but the metro area, actually 6 counties, would be about 2.5 million. Area may just be one small town or hamlet. It could also be a metro area like the 5 boroughs of NYC.

38. Wal-Mart
Could Wal-Mart hurt the republican party? The lack of real rural jobs could force bright kids to the big cities. After we make them gay we could make them liberal. Who am I kidding? You can't make people liberal. We are born that way.

40. I've done both
Grew up in the mountains in SW VA - Rand McNally says my town has 250. (I think it's a little more than that, but they're so widely scattered it's hard to tell.)

Now I live in Chicago, a $5 cab ride from the Loop.

When I was in college I lived in a small town in OH that I can't consider really rural because unlike my home "town" it had street names, a few traffic lights, and sidewalks.

The only type I've never lived in is a suburb. Never say never, but I don't see the appeal.

43. City, definitely.
My home "town" is a very beautiful and historic area and I love it in theory BUT...

I like to go back and visit my parents, but after being there more than a week or so, the slow pace of life and the lack of stimuli and nightlife and the BLOOD RED politics and the fact that you have to get in your car and drive just to the nearest neighbors' house, never mind the grocery store, starts to drive me batshit crazy.
