Poll question: Which is your favorite band? |
|
And tell us your favorite song and why!
I'd vote "Jefferson Airplane". The group often sung about real topics and not the fluffy, saccharine, generic, and equally cancerous "I love you" crap (though they rather did early on, but even then there was a glimmer of something unique, thank goodness). "Lather" being a good example of one of their better ditties, mind the drug reference though... Of course, "Good Shepherd" and "Volunteers" can't be beat. And I'd want "Meadowlands" to be played at my funeral... O8) And as for "Triad", it's done infinitely more tastefully than the drek being sung these days on the subject... :wow:

1. From that list? I guess I'd say R.E.M., the earlier stuff. |

2. Tie: the Who and the Beatles |
|
Because I couldn't even begin to pick a favorite from either. From the other choices you've offered for consideration, among those I like, I could pick a favorite quickly.
BTW, Beatles, but no Stones? You are SO gonna get flamed.

I still have to rate the Dead up there as my favorite band.
It is virtualy impossible to listen to them perform and be down. For me anyway.

Three great singers; Levon Helm, Rick Danko, and Richard Manuel. Great Keyboardist; Garth Hudson and one of the best and most unique guitarist/songwriters in rock'n'roll...Robbie Robertson.
One of a kind and brilliant.
If I had to pick one song I'd pick "The Weight"

12. The Who, The Band, Velvet Underground - |
|
these are some of my absolute favorite THINGS never mind BANDS. (this is some group!)
But more favorite than the Beatles? Can't be. And I'm young.
I've listened to the Beatles since I was an infant, and haven't stopped for 30 years.
My craziness:
- I once thought they might actually BE the second coming of Christ- (the spirit being wisely dispersed into a group rather than sitting precariously in one easily-crucified individual)
- We had only Beatles music at our wedding
- I think that they were the greatest threat the VRWC ever had to deal with, which is why they burnt their albums in huge stacks.
- I actually consider them UNDERplayed (not as underplayed as the Velvet Underground, but still...)
And my fav album these days is Rubber Soul.
Thanks for asking.

17. The Clash - Washington Bullets |
|
I love the political lyrics of Washington Bullets. There are other songs I like better for their musicality, but I like the lyrics of that song the best particularly because I learned about Victor Jara as a result:
Oh! Mama, Mama look there! Your children are playing in that street again Don't you know what happened down there? A youth of fourteen got shot down there The Kokane guns of Jamdown Town The killing clowns, the blood money men Are shooting those Washington bullets again
As every cell in Chile will tell The cries of the tortured men Remember Allende, and the days before, Before the army came Please remember Victor Jara, In the Santiago Stadium, Es verdad - those Washington Bullets again

20. That's Junior Mervin - not the Clash. I mean, they recorded it, but |
|
the lyrics aren't theirs. I'm not in disagreement, though...

.... over the years:
Eno, Bowie, Cocteau Twins, Stranglers, DJ Shadow, Stereolab, King Crimson, Yes, Wolfgang Press, Massive Attack, Beatles, Squarepusher, Boards of Canada, Talking Heads, Vangelis
Someone in another thread suggested that picking your top 10 (or was it 20?) songs of all time was pretty difficult. If I were to actually do it, I'm sure it would take a solid week :)
