2. REM.....
No doubr about it..

Love or hate them you have to admit they have tried all sorts of different styles of music and have never been afraid to go outside the box, unlike someother bands from, cay the Boston Area...

Also, Springsteen, while not a band, has produced some of the best rock music of all time...

Thunder Road, Born to Run, Incident on 57th Street, Born in the USA, Brilliant Disguise.....

23. I still don't think REM ever did anything better than "Murmur" - but
that doesn't mean I don't like some of the stuff that came after. :)

Springsteen's Born In The USA and Tunnel Of Love are among my well-loved albums.

7. "The First Coming," yes. "The Second Coming," probably not.
When Aerosmith discovered Diane Warren power ballads like "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing," they jumped the shark.

It's two bands...the one that fell apart at the seams on "Night In The Ruts," and the one that tried to regroup...unsuccessfully...on "Done With Mirrors," then finally hit paydirt on "Permanent Vacation."

The pre-"Ruts" band could kick the "revived" band's ASS.

THIS one was the top of the mountain:

Yep, Aerosmith used to be "the greatest American band." Now they flirt with greatness every once in a while.

:toast:

8. Aerosmith may not be the greatest but
they're one of my faves! Saw them 3 times in concert and each time they rocked the house. All 3 times were in this decade too.

21. Agreed.
Of course, what do I know? I'm planning to see Motley Crue next month. ;)

I did see Aerosmith recently - last May - and had a fabulous time. Cheap Trick was fun too.

10. Hogwash
Since they so obviously modeled themselves on a British band.

The greatest American band should be, you know, American. I could see choosing the Allman Brothers, or the Grateful Dead, as purveyors of a distinctly American roots music (Chicago blues or folk/ragtime) in a distinctly American mode of performance (extended improvisation like the jazz greats).

But not Aerosmith. They're a good band, not a great one.

But, America created Pop music so anything that came back from England originated here to begin with......

19. Whatever!
I think the first great american rock band was CCR. (Beach Boys are NOT a rock band. Sorry, that's my story and i'm stickin' to it.)

Aerosmith wouldn't even be in my top ten, as far as importance, and some i would put in the Top 10, i don't even like. (Eagles, for instance.)

Aerosmith may be amongst the most successful american rock bands ever, but they are not that important or influential.

20. i can think of half a dozen greater
just off the top of my head

the doors
the grateful dead
the allman brothers band
r.e.m.
the ramones
the red hot chili peppers

And those are just the ones with a fairly high degree of commercial success. There are plenty of other bands (wilco, for example) that had more modest commercial success but that I would consider greater.

I don't hate Aerosmith -- or at least, I didn't use to -- but I think they're far from the greatest american band, unless longevity is the sole criteria.

30. I wouldn't say THE greatest, but definately one of the greats
There are so many to choose from that its hard to pick, but there are only a small handfull that are greater than Aerosmith. REM and the Dead come to mind. I'm kinda fond of earlier counting crows stuff too.

That being said, Aerosmiths earlier stuff is unmatched, but after Pump, Aerosmith became irrelevant. Pump still knocks my socks off though.
