14. "Lay-by" is what Minnesotans call(ed) the almost extinct practice of |

purchasing something on "lay-away."
In the olden days, before credit cards were common, if you wanted to purchase an item of clothing that you couldn't afford all at once, you'd ask if you could buy it on "lay-by" (or "lay-away" outside of Minnesota). You'd make a down payment (perhaps 1/2 or 1/3 of the purchase price), and the sales person would put it aside on a special rack with your name pinned to it. You had to pay the balance within two weeks.
