Was Bob Hope really that good?
I take it Carson was. I may check out some DVDs of his.

But with Hope, the few clips I've seen of him just straight up annoy me.

1. Yes he was. Check out his movies. He was also a selfless USO
entertainer.

2. Bob Hope and Bing Crosby's "Road" movies
are hilarious. Hope was a selfless entertainer who gave his all for our troops over the course of the last century. His "Road" movies are usually on DVD for less than $10 or so.

3. Nice guy
I actually met him in college. He was doing a show and I was collecting for cancer for my fraternity. We asked for a photo. He said sure and then invited us into the "dressing room" party. We got to watch rushes of his last TV special with Bing.

(Yeah, I'm that old.) :)

4. In High School
I played hookey, donned a nursing uniform and snuck in see him perform for the Viet Nam wounded troops at Wilford Hall Hospital at Lackland AFB. ( and I would do it again, it's doubtful the nursing outfit would button now.)

8. I had mixed feelings about him
then one day I was going through my dad's WWII pics and there was a shot of Hope and Frances Langford on stage and my dad's 17 year old hand describing the photo, which had been taken from stage left. looking up. I asked my dad about it and he got a little misty. A young feller in New Guinea, scraping out airstrips in the jungle, thousands of miles from home, and this guy-this movie star-came all that way, bringing others with him to cheer up my dad and guys just like him-it meant more than he could say...so I'd say yeah, he was that good. Maybe not everyone's taste comedy-wise, but that good.

10. Watch the road pictures and Princess and the Pirate
It's not cutting edge, but if you're in the right mood they'll crack you up. He was also great in the Seven little Foys.

11. I liked his theme song
Thanks for the Memories and his earlier flicks. He also wrote some humorous and entertaining books about his travels and about his early days in show biz whene he had some rough spots which he described amusingly and anecdotes about people like Jimmy Durante.
