1. It's a lot like Rend Lake.
Only surrounded by cornfields.

5. I met more people from Chicagoland In Carbondale...
..it was wild. Like 20,000 Chicago kids ran down 57 every year, set up camp, then left for the summer. I hung out in town over a couple breaks. A ghost town then, dood!

9. Just another Saluki chiming in!
Been to Rend Lake. Haven't been to Lake Shelbyville, but I think I've driven past the spillway/dam a few times in between Springfield and Charleston.

Any route to avoid Decatur!

2. Great spot
Lot's of little coves and backwaters to explore and plenty of wildlife. Fishing is also pretty good if you are into that.

Just make sure you aren'r going when they have a Bass or Walleye tournament scheduled. Then the lake becomes a madhouse.

Also, if you are going boating, get a good chart. It's easy to get confused on which lake arm is which.

6. Many times
I remember on being on a boat on it for the Fourth of July one time.

I remember it fondly, but that's probably just cause I was drunk and in high school.
