They were great, but they aren't the high watermark of popular music to me. Maybe they're the high watermark of a particular style of popular music?

10. Even if you love the Beatles (I did at age 10) |
|
There isn't a song in their discography that I haven't heard a thousand times.
I recognize their greatness, but I could die without ever hearing another Beatles song and I would be okay with that.
And Weezer are a fun band.

19. Mocking the Beatles is a tired old trope of the post-punks. |
|
"Oh, my parents listened to that! It doesn't speak to MY generation!" Blah blah blah, dickheads.
The REAL establishment that needs to be railed against is the post-punkers who deny that anything good ever happened before The Sex Pistols (Or Throbbing Gristle)...these geeks have ruled music journalism for twenty-plus years and it's time for them to leave the stage so that the more catholic critics can come to the fore and re-establish some standards ("DIY" is the most destructive myth of the punk generation and needs to be destoyed, post haste.)

|
Do we really want the Pope to be the source of judgement on music.
Besides I don't see why we can't shit on both the post-punk and the really old stuff. Replacing one entrenched party with another is not advancement.

23. Well, when one group keeps fighting the "rock wars" of the 70's.... |
|
....and it's 2005, they deserve to be shat upon. Let it go, people. Prog rock is no longer a threat to you.

25. I'm talking about people who STILL find it necessary to hold on to |
|
their reactionary ideas about 70's rock; people who STILL find it necessary to prove their hip credentials by putting down Yes and Genesis and Foghat or whoever, ignoring completely how the wave of musicians who replaced them (the punks/post-punks) lowered musical standards....which was exciting for a while but has considerably dumbed down and stunted the rock audience's expectations of their artists.
You'll find the MOST (not all) people who put down the Beatles (Or Yes or Genesis) are doing it based on standards of "cool" and not on the actual quality of the playing/writing of the musicians.

I'm dumping on the beatles because I'm sick of the obligatory genuflection that people seem to expect towards them. Their shit is played out. They just don't rock!
