You got something to say to me?

To clarify: I like the Beatles NOT out of some automatic fealty to consensus opinion, but because they were all good players, they expanded the boundaries of music, set nigh-impossible standards for musicians to meet, and their harmonies were grogeous. That, and since I grew up listening to their music, whenever I hear it, it reminds me of good childhood memories.

So there, you Joy Division-listening fops!

6. You can listen to whatever you want....
But don't go around claiming the Beatles are shite just cuz they're old. Joy Division is old, too. Just cuz someband's old doesn't invalidate their acheivements as musicians.

20. And NEW African stuff:
Antibalas, for one, is really good.

Plus there's all that old Tony Allen stuff and the "Ethiopiques" collection of Ethipoian big-band jazz from the 70's. VERY cool, weird music.

31. Yeah, I've heard of NinjaTune.
You should read "The Wire" magazine. They cover all sorts of bizarre expirimantal music, avant-rock, improv, free jazz, and hiphop.....and are generous with free sampler CDs. A lot of the artists they feature are on NinjaTune.

36. well I may have
I used to have quite a pile of African stuff... used to comb the record stores for it. I like Angelique Kudjo as well. Zap Mama is another of my faves, if you like European - influenced pygmy chant/hip-hop stuff. Really great woman singer who is very innovative. I have several of their CDS. I'm not as up on the more obscure current African stuff.

I always get suspicious of an artist who's only capable of conveying a limited set of emotions in their work.
