1. There's so much specialized audio and video software out there

You need to be a bit more specific- what kind of setup do you have, including sound card, midi controller, musical instrument, and exactly what type of music (or video) you want to produce.

There are many musicians here that will be able to build on that beginning for you.

My personal favorite sound recording software is Cool Edit 2000, followed by Sony Sound Forge 7. Others prefer Cakewalk.

2. I second CoolEdit.

I've used a *bleep* version for years, and never had any problem.

I'll probably break down and buy the updated one, but for now, I've used it for everything from recording tapes to CDs then editing the files, to multitrack recording.

3. Not wise to advertise you use pirated software

In any case, I've played with the newer version, and I much prefer the older one. It's cleaner and simpler to use, and it has enough cool gadgets to keep you exploring for a long time.

I got it from a friend who got it from a friend.

Interesting story, though: he went to the Syntrillium website a while back, and after that, his version wouldn't work. So Big Brother is definitely always watching.
