Hummer driver scalds meter maid for writing him a ticket (illegally parked
http://www.boston.com/news/globe/editorial_opinion/oped/articles/2005/01/26/neglecting_mother_earth/

Last week, a 37-year-old man in a caffeine craze parked his Hummer in a Back Bay loading zone. By the time he rushed in and out of Starbucks, a meter maid was writing out a ticket. The driver was so outraged, he allegedly threw the scalding cup at the meter maid. She got first-degree burns on her face. The man said he merely slipped on the ice. Police so far believe the meter maid and charged him with assault with a deadly weapon.

9. Well, coffee is a deadly weapon for those selling coffee w/o
free-trade economic policies. Starbucks is the number one offender of this in my book so, yeah, their coffee is deadly. Offering Fair Trade coffee on the 20th of the month is puny lip service to the larger problem.

Still, I think the charge is a bit harsh, but maybe they thought by making it tough now, the probably-wealthy guy will plea bargain down the real charge: being a complete menace.

26. A scalding liquid may be legally defined as a deadly weapon
It depends on the local laws.

30. But since when are first-degree burns deadly?
Edited on Thu Jan-27-05 11:05 AM by asthmaticeog
Not that this guy isn't a total scumfuck, but if the coffee only produced the equivalent of a sunburn, that itself is proof that it was only capable of such. Assualt is inarguable, but "deadly" is over the line.

On edit: By the way, drivers of small cars have been assholes to meter maids, too; the Hummer thing just makes it easier to get people whipped up over this incident. Someone with an Insight or a Prius doing the same thing would be equally a dick.

23. Yeah, I know those H2's are big and boxy and don't leave a
lot of room to walk around them in a parking lot, so please be careful and don't slip when you are walking by them with your keys or something in your hand. I know that when I walk by one of them and I get distracted reading all the "support our troops" magnets on the back that it is real easy to nearly walk into the thing and stuff, so for the sake of the hummer drivers out there, won't you all be real careful out there, mmmkay?

21. The Hummer, not the coffee.
It's a deadly weapon because what it does to the planet, mid-size vehicles, and brown people living on sand.

25. Coffee don't seem that deadly, but you have to figure the police
factored in an "asshole factor." After all, it was only a parking ticket. Isn't karma a miracle? It's not often we get to witness it in action, even vicariously.

On second thought, I suppose if you needed a skin graft like that McDonald's victim described below, you could get an infection and die.

20. A Hummer in *Boston*?!
Jeez, what a moran! Boston streets are narrow enough that driving a normal-sized car becomes a hair-raising adventure, to say nothing of the frequent lane changes, rotaries, and good old Mass. drivers (green means Go, yellow means Go Faster).

What on Earth would possess anyone to drive a freepin' Hummer into the back Bay?! Criminetly.

is the piLing on about the hummer - if you didn't read the story, you'd think the maid was hit by a hummer, or the hummer threw the coffee.
