8. The Matrix, XXX with Vin Diesel, and anything by Jean Claude Van-Damme
just kidding

actually, that's a good question, because "Igby Goes Down" is usually associated with most of the movies I do like, art house ones.

Somebody in another thread lumped it in with "Garden State", which could be one of my all-time favorites.

I just didn't get "Igby Goes Down". Was it supposed to be tragic? It wasn't IMNSHO because Igby brought just about everything on himself. He was just some kind of smart-ass rich kid with the stupidest "problems" I ever heard of. Did he overcome anything in this movie? There just wasn't any doubt in my mind that he wouldn't when I walked out.

I really think I gave it a lot of consideration. It's been several years now since I was in that theater, but I think I remember giving it almost a full half-hour before I walked out. I was checking my watch over and over and over.

Or, maybe it's because I have somehting against the Culkin family -- I hated Party Monster in a very similar way.

Other movies I like, recently anyway, include Million Dollar Baby, In Good Company, The Sea Inside, Hotel Rwanda, most movies by Jim Jarmusch and John Sayles, and anything by Scorcese, both Coppolas, Sydney Lumet, David Mamet.

I'm only telling you this because you asked, and it might help in discovering what has been a very mysterious thing for me (why I hate 'Igby Goes Down'), not because I want to show off all of these movies I've watched. And I'm not saying that last sentence because I want to show you how 'humble' I am, either. Ad infinitum. I honestly don't want to even convince someone to change their position on it. I just think it would be cool to meet someone who already feels this way. It's like a litmus test, almost.

If anything is pretentious, I think it is 'Igby Goes Down'.

I live in Jersey. My only living parent insists on shoving psychiatric medication down my throat.

I just wish Natalie Portman would cry for me.

15. LOL
I was going to post something I wrote a few years ago, but several of the names of innocent parties haven't been changed. I gotta go to bed, soon, too. Maybe some other time.

PS Wouldn't that be pretentious?

12. Just cry? That's all?
Garden State was a fantastic movie...except that 3/4 through, Zach Braff completely changed the tone of the film and got all Hollywood-sappy on us.

I saw it at a free preview screening in Chicago before it opened nationally, and Braff was there for a Q+A after the film...the first thing he said was: "Has everyone here seen Fahrenheit 9/11? If you haven't, you need to tonight." There was great big cheer.

16. Yeah, before that....
It's enjoyably quirky and there's a genuine sadness under the surface for over an hour, then all of a sudden everyone starts crying and there's a Simon and Garfunkel tune and they're all standing in the rain saying meaningful things to each other.

It was as if 'Rushmore" had turned into "Steel Magnolias" for little while.

Other than that, I loved it.

22. Ha - when I read your subject line...
I was gonna reply with something snarky like "that explains it!". I find that whole Culkin clan incredibily annoying, but thought Kieran did a good job in this. I'd find Igby endearing one minute, then be ready to pound the crap out of him the next. Some have compared it to Catcher in the Rye -- now that's a stretch. I guess I just liked the idiosyncrasies and clever dialogue. Great soundtrack, too. (Or maybe I just relate to dysfunctional family movies - LOL.) C'mon, give it another try -- 30 minutes isn't enough (unless, of course, it's Throw Momma from the Train - now THAT sucked!).

25. I gave it 30 minutes from the time I looked at my watch.
Edited on Thu Jan-27-05 01:24 AM by Kire
I think I was actually in there for about an hour.

I also never thought he was endearing, or even sympathetic enough to pound the crap out of him. I just wanted to abandon him and live in a world where he didn't exist.

I think the comparison to Catcher was intentional, which might be another sign of pretention in my book.

----
because you mentioned the dialogue, I looked up the "memorable quotes" page for IGD on imbd

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0280760/quotes

I remember now thinking that the whole movie was about him telling us how he felt, and not showing us, which breaks the cardinal rule of acting, or directing, or rhetoric (or something).

Examples:

"So we started calling him Igby whenever he lied. And he lied a lot." {examples of his lies?}

"I'm scared."

"You're a furious boy. I mean eventually you won't be a boy and it'll eat you up. "

"Sookie: You're the fascist brother.
Igby: He prefers young Republican. "

"Sookie: He's your brother, you act like you hate him.
Igby: I do. I do hate him. He's totally hateable. Evil niblet fuck."

-------------

Feel free to come back with a line that actually shows something, but I think I can keep going with three other lines that only tell things, if you'd like to play that game.

I'm such a critic.

does go "down the spiral" or does he actually perform oral sex on the audience in the end.

I did miss the end.

6. You're a bigot!
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=105&topic_id=2512238#2513429

What you said was bigoted. You implied that those people who might like that movie don't share the film appreciation skills you do and are therefore stupid.
