If you could build your 'Dream Home' - all the square footage in
the world - what would be on your 'must have' list?

Mine:

My own personal skating rink - disco ball and all.

A park-like setting with ponds, fountains, hammock, winding path, shade trees & swing!

Wrap-around porch with lots and lots of rockers.

Spa-like bathroom with huge jetted soaking tub. Shower with rain-like
shower heads.

Library room.

Wine Cellar.

Yours?

1. Cutting edge
Computer run.

Think of the Enterprise...as a home.

Or as close to it as we can currently get.

25. You're right. I went to bed last nite still thinking of my dream
home and then remembered that I forgot about my very own private
screening room - huge plasma screen with surround sound. Rows of
seating that rock and recline for my friends and a super popcorn machine and soda fountain.

6. swimming pool
either a 25 yard long pool, three lanes wides (about 21-23 ft) or an "endless pool" - they're much smaller, so less water, easier to maintain, but I've never swum in one, so don't know if I'd really like it. They're sort of like an oversized jacuzzi, with the jets at one end spraying toward you, so you essentually stay in one place while swimming.

Apart from that, nothing more than 1200 sq ft of space, ideally less. I really hate housekeeping. :)

7. Library and Music Room
I have a fetish for a big black Steinway grand piano. Piano ranges from about $20,000 to $80,000. But a Steinway. Mmmmmmmmmmm.

8. Lots of closet space
Easy to clean. Lots of room for books. Clean, bright, easy care, no clutter. Private yard. Good amount of storage and shop space in the garage. I'm easy to please. In fact, that just about describes my current home. Oh, and one more thing, I'd like it located in a blue state.

9. I'll settle for "HGTV Dream Home 2005." Okay, it's a little larger than
I actually need...but if they're giving it away...

Just in case I don't win that, I've always wanted a English Cottage (about 1,000 sq. ft)...doesn't have to be too big. Pool and luxuries need not apply.

Simplicity and exclusion fine here.

11. What I want in a house
Huge built-in bookshelves in living room
Bathtub with room for two, spa jets and molded seats, multiple adjustable massaging showerheads and a rainfall option (should be easy to bypass unneeded showerheads when only one person is in shower)
Open floor plan greatroom with focus on kitchen, which is huge and has spiffy appliances, really nice cabinetry and a pantry. Trash, compost and recycling bins are designed into cabinetry.
Big laundry/utility room w/ spiffy front loading washer and a folding table.
Yard big enough for play and veggie garden but not too big to keep up
Hardwood or tile everywhere- not a speck of carpet in the house!
3 or 4 bedrooms, which need not be huge but should have nice closets
2 car garage, attatched but behind house and not visible from front
Passive solar design and solar panels on the roof, attic fan and heat pump, etc.

Exterior designisn't as important to me, but the house should be single story (otherwise it'd be a bear to heat and cool) and I'd like a nice porch. Design should be inviting to walk-up guests, driveway loops around the back keeping cars unobtrusive and less visible to the criminal element.

18. An atrium.
Actually, I'd want the house built around a courtyard that has been capped off and filled with tropical plants. I'd have some birdies to fly around in there, too (any SE Wisconsin DUers who have been to Heaven City restaurant know what I'm talking about -- well, Scott doesn't have birds in the dining room, but still).

A recording studio is a necessity.

A big kitchen with marble countertops and shiny Viking appliances.

A passive wine cellar dug into the bedrock so it looks all cool-like.

And this house would have to have been built either before WWII, or with the same materials and construction methods used then. I don't much care for recent private-dwelling architecture.

19. Dream Home
Edited on Thu Jan-27-05 08:02 AM by Ms Chicklet
Setting: Several acres in Connecticut.

Amazing kitchen - storage for everything, so there's lots of workspace on the counter. Dual-fuel stove with six burners, a two-burner griddle/grill, and two ovens. A retro-style fridge from Elmira Stove Works (and another huge fridge in the garage to handle stuff for entertaining). Two KitchenAid mixers. Tons of counter space for cooking and Christmas cookie baking.

Master suite with king-sized bed, luxury bath with massive, multi-jet shower (and hand-held). Huge jacuzzi tub. Separate vanities and enclosed toilets. Huge custom closets where I don't have to rotate my clothes out each season.

Huge great room on first floor with windows overlooking the back yard and woods. Fireplace. Lots of room for big-ass Christmas tree.

Walkout basement with area for indoor lap pool, built-in bar, duckpin bowling lanes, pool table, wine storage, and a huge TV.

Room for beau's iguana, bearded dragon and turtle. There'd also be a big cage built outside by the outdoor pool for the iguana to sit out on warm days.

A huge library with lots of comfy seats and chaises to sprawl on and read.

A big dining room for dinner parties. I saw the most gorgeous dining table in ribbon mahogany last week. That would be my table, since I can afford Dakota Jackson in this fantasy.

A big room where I can have my computer and do crafty stuff like my scrapbooks, and a drafting table to make scrapbooking easier. A similar room for the beau.

Four-car garage. My cars would be a Civic hybrid for around town, and some sort of fun car for road trips.

Enough guest rooms and a guest house or two so my whole family can spend the night.

21. A house with rip out plastic walls
Actually this is my wife's idea. Walls, floors and ceilings with many, many layers of clear plastic. When you want to clean the house you just grab a tab on the wall and pull it out the front door to the garbage like a giant garbage bag. Makes housework quick and simple. :-)

22. It would be off the grid.
Alternative power all the way.
It would be designed like a traditional Korean 'yangban'(aristocratic) home (see not very good picture below)

It would have a recording studio that was totally isolated sonically.
It wouldn't have to be very big (apart from the studio), 3 bedrooms would be plenty. It would have a lovely workspace for my wife to pursue her hobbies/interests, and a nice space for our cat to play in. Don't need a pool, a gold course, a disco or anything like that. Oh, but it would have a great kitchen...
