My daughter found a Democrat to date in high school!
Remember I live in the heart of Republicanism; in the right ventricle of the beast. So finding a boy of good conscience has been an ordeal.

This story began last year in middle school when my daughter reviewed her dating experiences and she realized that dating a guy just for his looks or his popularity was an enormous mistake. She realized, also, that she lost a lot of guy friends by crossing that neutral line of friendship.

Like most middle schoolers, dating may involve just a day or a week before the breakup occurred. Most of the boys that I did get to meet appeared to have right-wing nut parents. The last boy I ordered out of my house. I told him to call his parents to take him home because I found the two kids kissing on the sofa on his first visit! This happened even when I was being super chaperona, making my presence known and the boy still had the brass balls to make a move! I already knew the father was a right-wing nutcase before he came to the door to pick up his son. My daughter had warned me. He looked at my light beige toned shirt with suspicion. The color and design do appear ethnic. When I let him know that I would not tolerate such activity in my house he said that he understood and took his son away.

My daughter was grounded for a week, and after she stopped being angry with me she confessed that she was glad I had stopped him because the right-winger was a lousy kisser. We did talk in detail and she said that she is dissappointed with the dating scene because she seemed to lose too many guy friends when she started dating them.

So, we talked about finding someone who was the whole package and once found, just stay friends with him through high school. She said there was one such boy and showed me a picture. My gosh! He was adorable! Black hair and blue eyes! He wears his hair medium length, like the 70s. His hair slightly in his eyes. But she said, mom, I'll never get to date him because he's so intelligent and has a 4.0 and he's so shy. I told her not to worry because the goal was to stay friends until the senior prom (3 years from now). Since she already knew the secret of puppy love -- that dating actually breaks the magic, the key was to keep the magic alive through high school by staying friends.

Anyways, this boy is interested and they have been instant messaging each other. He has a DUKAKIS handle!!! A freshman in high school with a Dukakis handle! He's in the honors programs, is unhappy with this administration and is ready to move to Australia. A very intelligent choice considering these new talks of global warming.

So, here's me hoping that this is the start of a wonderful friendship.

1. That made me smile.

I hope it's the beginning of many years of friendship, and who knows what may develop from that friendship?

My best to them both, and to you for being such a wise Mom!
