Any other DU'ers who still watch The Simpsons regularly besides me?
Edited on Thu Jan-27-05 12:15 PM by Mike Daniels
I'm talking about new episodes (not syndicated ones although I watch those pretty religiously as well).

I admit that I still pretty much go out of my way to watch the new episodes and have done so even though the recent seasons haven't had the greatest hit/miss ratios in terms of the total season run.

It's not so much out of force of habit but because (sue me) I actually still find some charm in the series and feel that even the recent seasons have had a fair share of nuggets that make me want to keep watching just to see what else may happen.

However, I do think they've done the guest star angle to death and need to limit celebrity appearances to voicing "characters" and scrap the "celebrity x,y, and z" come visit Springfield.

Anyway, are there others who still enjoy watching the Simpons as a source of new episodes or am I just a fan-boy who won't let go.

3. I still love the Simpsons, and they've actually had some damned
good episodes the past two seasons (the episode where they all got thrown into Alcatraz comes to mind).

4. D'oh!
I missed a few this season, but I still watch whenever I can. It's hard, though, because I relate to Lisa too much.

6. The newer episodes from the end of last season to now have been excellent
While many of the episodes from seasons 10-14 have been decidedly second rate, the show is now producing some of the funniest episodes in years.

Of particular note are the episodes where the Simpsons were thrown in jail for dissent and the prescription drug episode.

11. Still watch it religiously
The last two episodes were two of the funniest in a while.

They went on a run for a couple of seasons where it seemed like every episode was plotted as "Let's give Homer a wacky job and the script will write itself." (Homer's an artist, Homer's a food critic, etc.)I seriously thought that that would be the death of the show. But they seem to have strayed from that formula. And that has made all the difference.

12. I still watch...
...even though it's not so great this year. But it's gotten not-so-great before, and then good again, so there's no reason to believe it won't swing back upward.

It's funny, the Simpsons is kind of coming to occupy a place like that of "Saturday Night Live," whereby it can get bad, then good again, then bad again, etc. No reason it can't stay on forever (or until, Muses forbid, one of the principal voices quits or dies--replacing any of them would just be wrong).

What's funny about that is that both shows escape traditional Jump-the-Shark laws for opposite reasons. Traditional shows get bad because of things that can't be helped, e.g. the kids grow up, the main characters get married, etc... SNL escapes this because it's a sketch show with no attachments in that respect. The Simpsons does because those things don't ever need to change--the kids don't have to grow up, and when some interpersonal relationship alters, they can just say "fuck it" and have it go back to normal the next week. They do some permanent things, like killing off Maude Flanders, to keep it fresh, but those come around like once every five years as opposed to two or three a season like on a regular sitcom.

14. I don't know if this counts, but
I use German language versions of the Simpsons to help teach my students how the language is spoken in dialectal form.

15. I still like the Simpsons
and thought last season was a pretty good season. Because of a busy schedule I haven't watched any of the last few weeks, but I've got them recorded and ready to watch once I get some free time.

I definitely think they're still worth watching, and I still usually plan my Sundays to clear the way for the show at 7.
