I'd like to volunteer to assist in the suicide of the California guy
that caused the train crash and deaths.

Am I being mean spirited?

2. Has he been charged with anything?
Manslaughter? Criminally negligent homicide? Wreckless endangerment? Assault with a deadly weapon? Anyone?

11. Murder? That never crossed my mind!

From http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6870372">MSNBC.com:
(The driver) went beyond leaving his car at a train crossing, instead driving it...onto a railbed where the vehicle became trapped between two tracks...(He) stood by and watched the gruesome collision, which scattered wreckage and bodies over a quarter-mile of track.

Does that constitute premediation (Murder 1) or intent (Murder 2)? If trespassing on the railroad property is a felony, Murder 3 is feasible. But it sounds more like he engaged in negligence/wrecklessness that he either knew or should have known could result in death (manslaughter 2). The SUV was "trapped" on the tracks? The defense will just claim it wasn't his fault that he couldn't move it (though I thought SUVs could climb out of anything).

Unless the prosecution can provide reason to believe that the "suicide attempt gone bad" story is a phony, they may have set themselves up for an overturned conviction already.

5. Not really.
Most people understand your feelings.

You will probably have a lot of competition, though.

If the talibornagain gets any stronger, you may have your wish.

They will make public stonings legal.

7. I know the feeling
but the country really does need better mental health care. Especially for the suicidal.

He derailed THREE trains with one SUV -- that must be a dubious record of some kind.

8. Facing 11 counts of murder with special circumstances
according to L. A. Times. The DA is seriously pissed about this one, is going to seek death.

I think at the least this jerk has seen his last day in a free and open society. He should never see the outside of a jail or prison while he is still breathing.

What a tremendous shame and un-necessary waste of life.

12. i agree that this was most unfortunate, and a terrible waste of life..
but the death penalty?!! Give me a break. I am strongly opposed to capital punishment as it is, but the death penalty is to be reserved for the "worst of the worst". No question that this guy has some serious emotional issues, but he isn't a monster.

10. No
However, in his case, having life imprisonment while under suicide watch could be an appropriate punishment.
