Today, after 5 years and £5000+, I paid off my student loan. Hooray!
Today's exchange rates, the original balance of my loan(s) amounts to about $10,000 American. I graduated before the Millennium, and have been paying it back at about $170 a month ever since (minus a short bout of unemployment post-graduation). I'm free, free!!!!!!

12. Oh, it'll pay off soon enough, just wait.
And they're cheap loans.

3. I haven't touched mine.
I owe about 6000 quid from 1994-8. I've never earned enough to qualify for repayments.

5. Ha! That didn't stop them charging me!
"You don't earn enough" my friends said, "Get a deferment". But the SLC was adamant: I would pay. I started paying when I earned £19,000.

6. Ah. I don't think I've ever earned more than $30,000 Cdn a year.
It would have to be about $45,000 before I'd have to make repayments.
I doubt I'll ever earn that, really.

7. This calls for a celebration!
I remember when I paid mine off, it was a great feeling! One great advantage too is that your credit history will benefit forever for this.

10. After a while, you don't notice it. You just get used to it.
Then it's a matter of patience. Just wait. Keep earning, and wait.

11. Hey, I thought college was paid for by the state in England?
Werent they just talking about charging now for the first time?

13. My education was free. And my accommodation was subsidised.
But my living expenses, I had to pay myself.

I was the penultimate year of free college education; I graduated in 1999, and those who graduated in 2001 paid for it.

What they're talking about now is top-up fees, which are a different matter and I shouldn't get started on.
