5. .
Tarpon Springs is right off of us 19. its a small little greek town, has great greek restaurants, its not soo bad. its adjacent to clearwater, and isnt too far from tampa/st pete area. its not a hustle/bustle as tampa/st pete either. my gf lives practically across the street from tarpon springs.

8. Visited there once
I recall a really kick-ass Greek restaurant, Pampas. Don't know if it's still there.

There was a really fun tourist-trap simulated Greek Village. My best friend and I tried on belly-dancing costumes. :D I still have gold-threaded scarf I bought there. :-)

Oh, and learning about SpongeBob-diving was fun.

Sorry matcom. None this is very practical. But I do remember I had a good time. :D

9. Tarpon Springs ....
Tarpon Springs is town/later city built around a series of bayous in Northern Pinellas County. In the first decade of the 1900 - Greeks were brought in to hardhat dive for sponges in the Gulf - see Beneath the 12-mile Reef with Robert Wagner. Doing so changed the face of the town and the Greek Community grew to become the powerbase of the town.

The town has some great character and characters - but its so much bigger than when I graduated from TSHS - so its has lost a bit of its charm.

Every Epiphany, the Greek Orthodox Bishop tosses a cross into Spring Bayou and the Boys of Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church dive to retrieve it in a great ethnic pageant.

Great fishing is to found out in the Gulf - and Howard Park isn't a bad beach either.

14. Unemployment for December 04 - 3.5%
Pinellas - 3.5
Pasco (county just across the river to the north) - 4.5%

Very metropolitan - commutes can be madding is you have to go that direction.

12. All I can say is that I moved from the NE to Florida 4 years ago...
and I've spent the past few trying to figure out why I moved. The weather is what made me move, and it's still the only advantage. I'll be moving to California as soon as possible myself.

On the other hand... it is definitely reasonable here... you can get a great house for a fraction of what it would cost somewhere else... I'll be downsizing for sure when I move. It's all about priorities... I am now surrounded by Republicans and haven't found any friends who share any of my interests... after having lived in Manhattan for ten years, it's quite a culture shock here.

Edited on Thu Jan-27-05 03:24 PM by fishnfla
People start talking about crazy life changes (from experience of friends and relatives back home)

But more to the point:

Housing costs are soaring on this side of the state( Edit I'm on the east coast).Construction costs too. I understand the situation is similar in the Boston area. Compare what you are looking at now to what is was 2 years ago. Project that out 2-3 years. Land availabity is an issue too.

Have only visited the Clearwater area. Beautiful beaches, great for shelling. It is heavily Repug. You'll be near the red sox training camp and can see them play TB(a sure win). My feeling is the fishing is better over here, but the 10,000 islands region to your South is very good. Gulf fishing is so-so. No stripers Matty, snook and reds, snapper and grouper.

Employment: not a concern. If you work hard, you'll have no problem. Looking at the resumes coming across my desk, the pool of educated and quality applicants is next to nil

Everyone here is from somewhere else-the west coast gets alot more midwesterners, the east coast gets the new englanders, as a general rule.

If I had to pick a place to move (just me) it would be St Augustine, Palm Coast or New Smyrna Beach, with NSB my first choice

Edited on Thu Jan-27-05 03:58 PM by Kathy in Cambridge
right near New Smyrna. It's very nice and really affordable.

Florida is still way cheaper than the Boston area-you definitely get more bang for your buck even in the pricey areas.

Like Matcom, I'm ready to pack up and move after this rough month we've had. I'm going to see my parents in FL next week! Woo hoo!

23. Screw Florida! Come to San Diego Matcom. Its turning bluer by the year.
A lot of repugs here but not even close to the scale you'll find in FL.
The weather is much better here.

24. Actually
if you are thinking of moving here in 2 or 3 years Jeb won't be governor anymore! Yeah! I'm counting the days.

I'm sorry I can't help you with Tarpon Springs though. I've never been there. Just went and looked at their website though and if their mayor doesn't mind being photographed with SpongeBob it must be a pretty cool place to live. :toast:
