Similar to how Hotmail is Microsoft's. Unlike Hotmail, which is free to anyone who goes to a website and signs up for it, G-mail is available by invite only at this point in time. Marketing strategy I suppose. Before using gmail, you may want to do a search on some of the privacy concerns that have been raised over it's policies and practices. Funny thing was at one time these invites were considered valuable and people actually begged for them and offered items to trade. Now it appears they are not in demand to nearly the same extent.
