Mmm..kernel memory error blue screen of death |
|
Hells yeah. Thank god for backing up CDs. I've been told that kernel memory errors are the result of corrupted memory- is this true? And if so, I'm quite screwed because I am broke and have no money to correct this. Sigh...

3. Could be a bad driver, or somesuch... |

Windows XP I presume? Usually with Windows XP, an exception could be called when you have a driver for hardware corrupted, a hardware failure, or possible, MS sucks ;)

5. I've never had a memory chip go bad after it had been installed for awhile |
|
Edited on Thu Jan-27-05 07:27 PM by htuttle
Maybe if it's running really hot, or something else broke and is now feeding it too much current, but I've usually noticed bad RAM within a very short time after I installed it. Then again, I mostly use Macs, and they do RAM tests when they boot.
If you moved your machine recently, you might have managed to unseat one of the chips, but only if it wasn't snapped in securely when it was installed.
I've gotten kernel memory panics on Solaris when I merely exhausted all RAM (and swap space). Maybe it was a temporary thing, especially if you were doing something RAM intensive when it happened. Simply rebooting would fix this if it were the case.

...frequently my laptop gets, well, extremely hot and has shut down on several occasions due to overheating. You might be onto something.

I haven't seen one of those in years. Not since I quit using Win 98 SE.
Oh, and kernel memory errors in Windows usually come because of multiple devices attempting to access the same memory block, so you might need to look at resource allocation for your peripherals.

That's another possibility. I recently installed several USB devices (iPod, printer, digital camera) so that could be another factor...
