|
Condoleeza comes from an Italian musical term. No clue about Denzel.

As others said, Oprah is a mangled Biblical name of Orpah and once she was named that way, as an adult and a successful businesswoman, she established her production and named it Harpo - Oprah spelled backward.

|
for Gail's deformed toe. You can look it up.
There are a lot of odd names in the black community. Mrs. Squeech used to have a job doing first-time homebuyer training in the inner city, and she compiled a list of such names, which I used to carry in my wallet. The only one I remember offhand was LaTrina. I assume the proud parents didn't know the word for where campers pee.
This debate also reminds me of that occasion when a Bushie official from the Department of Education tried to do some outreach, and met a girl named Isis, who proudly informed him that it was also the name of an Egyptian god-- upon which, showing his true colors, he replied that it really meant "stupid dirty girl." That's my ad hoc translation of "Condaleeza."

18. Thanks for posting that -- the Repub senator mangled the |
|
pronunciation. I tried to look it up in dictionaries of musical terms online but none had this term. The senator said it meant "with sweetness."
My Italian is rudimentary but I do know "con" is "with"and "dolce" is sweet, so I believed what he said but wanted to know what the exact term was.
Odd that I can't find the musical term listed -- I wonder if it's obscure?

I know that she was a Dem at one time and apparently changed her thinking relative to Carter's then foreign policy in Afghanistan. I am always curious to know what foreign policy folks and academics think about her.

I work in insurance and have seen some interesting names on health claim forms. I feel for the kids when they go to school and have to learn to spell their names (well I guess Apple wont be too difficult) but do applaud parents for being way more creative than mine were. I hate boring names.

Listen to "A Boy Named Sue" and see if that explains it.
Incidentally, did you know Shel Silverstein actually wrote that?
On another note, I had a file come across my desk a while back with the name Undra Ware. I think that trumps Condoleeza, Apple, and any other name I've seen. In defense of the parents, he was foreign, so I doubt they realized what it was in English.
