It is so cold here it is like Siberia!
A Hungarian goalkeeping cutie once said that to me on a winter's night in Wichita (imagine the accent). I'm feeling much that way in PA tonight. It's 9 degrees!

3. I'm in the Pittsburgh area - so it's not that surprising
My husband is coming to visit tomorrow (in OH today giving talks) and said, "You said it was 41 degrees! It's cold here, and I didn't bring anything!"

12. Is that 41 with or WITHOUT the "wind chill factor?" With those 3 rivers,
the wind really whips up there this time of year. I remember standing waiting for public transit many January's, and it was easily 20-below with wind-chill-factor. I remember icicles on my eyelashes, and inside my nose, and toes frozen so cold I could no longer feel them.
I do NOT miss the Cold. Nooooooo!

2. A former co-worker of mine said
"You could hang meat in this office"...the boss kept it at 57 degrees, all of the time. The thermostat had a lock box covering it, and he had the only key. Even when he was out of town, we froze.

4. That's awful
I don't know which is worse - being too hot or being too cold.

10. Someone posted a list of freeware the other day
I downloaded something called "AllChars" that lets you type Ctrl, then 2 other keys, to make characters in any Windows program. I just tried a degree sign, and it works. °

14. There're four fairly easy ways
(1) You can copy and paste a character from any web page into a post. This works for the standard character set, which includes many of the special characters and those letters with diacritical marks as often seen in Spanish or German. E.g. ÀÁÂÃÄÅÆÇÈÉÊËÌ and so on.

(2) On a Windows system, there's an Accessory called "Character Map" (charmap.exe in the Windows subdirectory) that offers a source for copy and paste from various character sets.

(3) You can type the Alt-character sequence by holding down the 'Alt' key and typing the 4-digit code on the numeric keypad for the character desired. E.g. Alt-0252 is ü, Alt-0211 is Ó, Alt-0188 is ¼, and Alt-0186 is º.

(4) Use the HTML special character-coding sequences. There're uncounted reference web pages (and books) that'll list these character coding sequences. I use http://vzone.virgin.net/sizzling.jalfrezi/chars.htm. Exploiting the fact that DU is web-based, just use the code. E.g. "°" and "°" is °

FWIW, this is a FAQ.

Although we're currently warmer here, we had to deal with the week-long block of -25 temps a week ago.
