Favorite "dead person" song |
|
You know the type. Boy meets Girl. Boy loves girl. Girl or Boy dies. The Other mourns.
My favorite, "Last Kiss" the Pearl Jam version.
So What's yours.

I forget who did it. It was a parody of the classic romance gets interrupted by a car wreck song of the late 50's, and ends with the guy going out and digging up his girl's grave so that he could be with her corpse.

Don't know if this fits what you're asking for, but Pete Townsends tribute to Keith Moon with this song is one of my favorites.

"Don"t Fear the Reaper"
"Romeo and Juliet, are together in eternity"
I know the overtones of suicide are quite visible in the lyrics and the song, but I really like the melody.

Reached #38 in the charts and stations won't play it. They definitely won't today.
Laying here looking at the ceiling Someone lays a sheet across my chest Something warm is flowing down my fingers Pain is flowing all through my back
I try to move my arms and there's no feeling And when I look I see there's nothing there The face beside me stopped it totally bleeding The girl I knew has such a distant stare
I remember We were flying along and hit something in the air I remember We were flying along and hit something in the air
Then I looked straight at the attendant His face is pale as it can be He bends and whispers something softly He says there's no chance for me
I remember We were flying along and hit something in the air I remember We were flying along and hit something in the air
Life is flowing out my body Pain is flowing out with my blood The sheets are red and moist where I'm lying God in Heaven, teach me how to die
I remember We were flying along and hit something in the air I remember We were flying along and hit something in the air

7. Jim Carroll - "People Who Died" |
|
Teddy sniffing glue he was 12 years old Fell from the roof on East Two-nine Cathy was 11 when she pulled the plug On 26 reds and a bottle of wine Bobby got leukemia, 14 years old He looked like 65 when he died He was a friend of mine
Refrain: Those are people who died, died Those are people who died, died Those are people who died, died Those are people who died, died They were all my friends, and they died
G-berg and Georgie let their gimmicks go rotten So they died of hepatitis in upper Manhattan Sly in Vietnam took a bullet in the head Bobby OD'd on Drano on the night that he was wed They were two more friends of mine Two more friends that died / I miss 'em--they died
Repeat Refrain
Mary took a dry dive from a hotel room Bobby hung himself from a cell in the tombs Judy jumped in front of a subway train Eddie got slit in the jugular vein And Eddie, I miss you more than all the others, And I salute you brother/ This song is for you my brother
Repeat Refrain
Herbie pushed Tony from the Boys' Club roof Tony thought that his rage was just some goof But Herbie sure gave Tony some bitchen proof "Hey," Herbie said, "Tony, can you fly?" But Tony couldn't fly . . . Tony died
Repeat Refrain:
Brian got busted on a narco rap He beat the rap by rattin' on some bikers He said, hey, I know it's dangerous, but it sure beats Riker's But the next day he got offed by the very same bikers

Their bluming flesh for me to hold?
Naaaw! I'll put that one on ice  and submit "Vincent" by Don McClean instead.
Such a sweet guitar accompaniment to his voice and also one hell of a intense and moving poem.
:loveya:
Starry, starry night Paint your palette blue and gray Look out on a summer's day With eyes that know the darkness in my soul Shadows on the hills Sketch the trees and the daffodils Catch the breeze and the winter chills In colors on the snowy linen land
Now I understand What you tried to say to me How you suffered for your sanity How you tried to set them free They would not listen they did not how Perhaps they'll listen now
Starry, starry night Flaming flowers that brightly blaze Swirling clouds in violet haze Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue Colors changing hue Morning fields of amber grain Weathered faces lined in pain Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand
Now I understand What you tried to say to me How you suffered for your sanity How you tried to set them free They would not listen they did not how Perhaps they'll listen now
For they could not love you But still your love was true And when no hope was left inside On that starry, starry night You took your life as lovers often do But I could have told you Vincent This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you
Starry, starry night Portraits hung in empty halls Frame less heads on nameless walls With eyes that watch the world and can't forget Like the strangers that you've met The ragged men in ragged clothes The silver thorn of bloody rose Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow
Now I think I know What you tried to say to me How you suffered for your sanity How you tried to set them free They would not listen they're not listening still Perhaps they never will

14. Stark Irony of the Day -- |

Ray Peterson, singer of `Tell Laura I Love Her,' dead at 65NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Ray Peterson, whose 1960 hit "Tell Laura I Love Her" exemplified the teen tragedy song popular in early rock 'n' roll, has died.
Billed as "The Golden Voice of Rock 'n' Roll," he died Tuesday at his home in Smyrna, a Nashville suburb, according to officials at Woodfin Memorial Chapel.
Peterson was 65 and had been suffering from cancer.
The Denton, Texas, native began singing as a child. His youth was marked by a prolonged struggle with polio, and he sang to entertain his fellow patients in a Texas hospital.
When he was 18 he moved to Los Angeles and was signed to RCA Records. http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/entertainment/10750233.htm?1c--p!

18. Fire and Rain - James Taylor |
|
Just yesterday morning they let me know you were gone Susanne the plans they made put an end to you I walked out this morning and I wrote down this song I just can't remember who to send it to
I've seen fire and I've seen rain I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend But I always thought that I'd see you again
Won't you look down upon me, Jesus You've got to help me make a stand You've just got to see me through another day My body's aching and my time is at hand And I won't make it any other way
Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend But I always thought that I'd see you again
Been walking my mind to an easy time my back turned towards the sun Lord knows when the cold wind blows it'll turn your head around Well, there's hours of time on the telephone line to talk about things to come Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground
Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend But I always thought that I'd see you, baby, one more time again, now
Thought I'd see you one more time again There's just a few things coming my way this time around, now Thought I'd see you, thought I'd see you fire and rain, now

19. Some pretty good choices, and it got me thinking about a song |
|
I can't quite remember. Sort of a poppish sound, not particularly metal, about a dead girlfriend (or boyfriend, I suppose) with some sort of chorus like "you will be with me forever" because he's burying them in the lake beside his house or something. Used to hear it in the mid-90's about the time that "no self esteem" song came out.
Anyway, another song they may be about dead people, Nautical Disaster by Tragically Hip
I had this dream where I relished the fray and the screaming filled my head all day. It was as though I'd been spit here, settled in, into the pocket of a lighthouse on some rocky socket, off the coast of France, dear. One afternoon, four thousand men died in the water here and five hundred more were thrashing madly, as parasites might in your blood.
Now I was in a lifeboat designed for ten and ten only, anything that systematic would get you hated. It's not a deal nor a test nor a love of something fated.
The selection was quick, the crew picked and those left in the water got kicked off our pantleg and we headed for home. Then the dream ends when the phone rings, you doing alright he said it's out there most days and nights, but only a fool would complain. Anyway Susan, if you like, our conversation is as faint as a sound in my memory, as those fingernails scratching on my hull.

12. I Hold Your Hand In Mine One more love song. I generally like to include at least one or two love songs in the evening's program, partly perhaps to convince people that even at the Harvard University Graduate School, that hotbed of celibacy that I used to call home, we did have our moments. This one is a tender ballad entitled simply I Hold Your Hand In Mine.
I hold your hand in mine, dear, I press it to my lips. I take a healthy bite From your dainty fingertips.
My joy would be complete, dear, If you were only here, But still I keep your hand As a precious souvenir.
The night you died I cut it off, I really don't know why. For now each time I kiss it I get bloodstains on my tie.
I'm sorry now I killed you, For our love was something fine, And till they come to get me I shall hold your hand in mine.
You know, of all the songs I have ever sung, that is the one I've had the most requests not to.
