Making shrimp shish kabob with mangoes....Should I peel mangoes?
Edited on Fri Jan-28-05 03:26 PM by Rowdyboy
Is grilled mango peel edible/good?

Also, should I wrap the shrimp with bacon? I read that in one recipe and have neveer tried it...

Also having grilled mushrooms, sweet onion, bell pepper and zucchini!

1. I've never eaten mango peel
I would definitely advise peeling them first.

Sounds good with or without the bacon. :9

2. Peel the mangoes and wear rubber gloves

raw mango can trigger eczema if/when touched by bare skin.
Do wrap the shrimp in bacon-very Hawaiian.

4. definitely peel 'em
shrimp wrapped in bacon is always good. Try pancetta if you can get it.

I like wrapping mushrooms in bacon and grilling them. Yum.

If you can get some good asparagus, take off the woody inch or two on the bottom end, drench the spears in olive oil, then put kosher salt on them until you think you've put too much on. Grill until it starts to char.

I love grilled corn on the cob, too. I can't wait for summer when the produce gets really good around here.

9. I have a small (10 fft X 10 ft) asparagus bed that will start producing
within the next month...I can't wait! There's nothing like picking fresh asparagus and using it right away. Love it steamed with lemon-butter or raw in a salad. Broiled, baked or steamed....The only way I haven't tried is deep fried and I may still geet around to that!

15. My asparagus
never makes it out of the garden. Hey, it's there, I'm in the yard, I'm hungry, it's good raw, it's organic and doesn't even need to be washed.... Good stuff!

7. The peels can make you sick.
I have a friend who got a bad rash from eating them.

12. We lived in S. Fla for a while and learned that many people
are allergic to Mango peelings (the oil in the peelings, really), and never find out until they peel their first mango at age 44. Be sure to wash your hands after peeling.

13. I have the same reaction to plantains
When I peel them I have to wear rubber gloves, or else I break out all over my hands and wrists.

14. Mangos are related to poison ivy
But I'm really sensitive to poison ivy, and not to mango peels at all. If you aren't sensitive to it, one of the best ways to eat them is to slice straight through one side as close to the pit as possible (with the peel still on), then down the other side of the pit. cut each side into a grid, but just through the flesh, not through the peel. Then you can flip them inside out, and you get nice square chunks you can either eat directly from the peel, or cut off with a knife.
