Sharon Stone Raises Funds at World Forum
http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/entertainment/gossip/10759355.htm?1c

DAVOS, Switzerland - Sharon Stone raised $1 million in five minutes Friday for mosquito nets in Tanzania, turning a panel on African poverty into an impromptu fund-raiser.

About an hour into the panel, when a U.N. official said 150,000 African children were dying of malaria every month because they didn't have bed nets, Stone suddenly rose from her seat in the audience.

"I'd like to offer $10,000 to help you buy some bed nets today," Stone told Tanzanian President Benjamin William Mkapa, who was on the panel along with Microsoft founder Bill Gates and others.

Stone ten implored others in the hall - packed with several hundred well-heeled executives and political leaders attending the WOrld Economic Forum - to reach into their pockets. "Just stand up. Just stand up. People are dying in his country today," she said. "And that is not OK with me today."

(snip)

The nets, a simple method to help protect from malaria-carrying mosquitos, can be had for as little as $7 for pretreated models that last up to five years.

I don't normally post any sort of celebrity news, but I just saw the clip on BBC World News, and it was very cool. Bill Frist was there trying to moderate, and totally lost control of the proceedings to her when she did this.

Good for her, imagine if we all did things like this at any level, how much better this world would be!

9. Just watched "Total Recall" again!!!!
Opening scene in slow-mo is a wonder. The Gropinator is all over her! She puts up a good fight. BTW - Frist and Gates together have enough money to buy a mosquito net for EVERYONE who lives in Malaria-prone areas! Always good to see Dr. "First family in medicare fraud" Frist get humiliated!

She just climbed up a few notches in my book.

I'll go see the sequel to Basic Instinct on principle now. Guess that means I have to watch the first one, huh?

(Edited because I can't spell)

12. She showed up in Minneapolis on Election Day to rally the troops of
GOTV activists. She spent the day flying around the country speaking to gatherings of phone bankers and door knockers.

I've never actually seen any of her movies, but it's obvious that her heart is in the right place.
