Can somebody help me out re: Cheney's attire at Auschwitz?

OK, so I'm not the most tactful or sensitive person you'll ever meet. As such, I'm not sure why so many people are criticizing Cheney for what he wore to the Auschwitz commemoration. What was it he wore again? An olive drab parka or something like that?

I certainly have no love for the VP, nor am I an expert on wardrobe coordination, but I'm not sure what the big deal is about Cheney's clothing. So, can somebody help me out here? What should he have worn instead? :shrug:

it is a solemn occasion, he should have worn what he always wears when he's seen in public-black dress coat.

Not attire appropriate for going out to use the snow-blower, as the Washington Post put it.

It was the etiquette equivalent of giving everyone there, and everyone they were memorializing, the finger.

It's like going to a funeral in your jogging suit...The Vice POS has no decency, but after presiding over killing 3,000 Americans on 9/11, why would he worry about 1,000,000+ human beings incinerated at Auschwitz ?

4. It was a somber occasion.

Everyone else wore tasteful black overcoat and more somber hat. Cheney wore a parka with his name stitched on it, and skit-type hat with "Staff 2001" on it, and lace-up brown hiking books.

A dark suit, black overcoat, winter fedora or stetson and black shoes would have been more appropriate for the occasion.

black suit with black shoes. He was attending a ceremony in remembrance of the horrible atrocities committed at Auschwitz. All of the other dignitaries on hand were dressed for the occasion. He looked like an idiot. In Polish they'd say he looked like a "dupa" - ass.

6. This was no ordinary event

This was a solemn occasion, commemorating a horrible event. It was to be attended by dignitaries. For such an occasion, there's appropriate and inappropriate attire. Casual attire is definitely not appropriate.

How would you feel if someone showed up at the funeral of a family member, looking as though they were on the way to the beach and just stopped in as though they were doing you a favor?
Cheney's action is like that thoughtless person on the way to the beach.

...what a complete jerk! Lynne is dressed fine. Why couldn't she have kicked his ass to wear something more appropriate? Oh yeah, I forgot. She doesn't care either, but had to look nice for the cameras.

9. It's the lack of respect for the solemn occasion

musch the same as wearing a sundress and flip-flops to your father-in-law's funeral...or a cut offs to a wedding..

The man is a mega millionaire who has scores of people to tend to his every need. There is NO excuse for him wearing inappropriate clothing.

He OWNS a dress coat, and if it was still too cold, he could have "layered" under the coat.

It was a "thumb in the eye" to "old Europe".

Tee shirt to a wake or funeral? The point is the inappropriateness of dress for the occasion. The casual dressing style communicates a lack of respect for the solemness of the event.

But that's the cheney bush junta for ya-The chimp not attending a single soldier's funeral, Rumsfeld, having a machine sign letters to dead soldiers' families, and cheney not being bothered enough by a commemoration of 1,000,000 dead people. Everyone else is sweating their asses off wearing black suits suitable for such a somber international occasion where numerous world leaders are in attendence...you probably get the idea.

18. He forgot to add the yellow farmer gloves to his parka

In the midwest, where Dick grew up, the farmers buy yellow, felt-like farmer gloves that they wear during field work, slopping the hogs, taking milk in from the barn, scooping manure. And so on.

Well, Dick had the casual, down-home-on-the-farm look pretty well mastered, but he was missing the yellow farmer gloves. Major faux paux, especially for a casual occassion such as the liberation of a death camp.

Considering that these types of gloves are pretty cheap--you can get about a dozen of them for five dollar--well you can being to understand how embarassing this is for Bush's great country.

It's all about the folksy image see. And once that is blown, like the way Dick blew it today, it's hard to re-gain the people's trust and respect.
