Poll question: What new movie should I see for my Saturday night date?
She is of course a liberal, so political movies are OK. I'm undecided.

1. Sideways
Very smart movie with some absolutly gut busting scenes of pure hillarity.
Then go out for wine!

3. Ok, but is it too oriented toward middle aged people?
That's the impression I get from what I've heard. We're in our mid-20's and don't want to get any older.

8. Heck, I'm 19 and loved it
If you like movies based on characters, you'll love it! :hi:

9. Heh. I'm 36 and agree.
How many mid-mid-early-life crisis'es can a person have?

12. Gee, if you don't want to get any older, you may have to die soon. n/t

15. I prefer Ingmar Bergman to those old Who farts.
Quothe Bergman: "Growing old is like climbing a mountain: Your breath becomes shorter, but your views become more expansive."

I'm certainly glad I'm long past my twenties, but that's my story.

But, hey, whatever. Maybe instead of taking in a movie you can write up a suicide pact to pledge to keep yourselves from becoming (gasp) thirty.

Exactly why I want to stay young.

19. Ah, but the only way to stay young is to die young.
Actually, I rather like taking things seriously. That's the problem I think, nothing's serious until everything is serious.

That's why I'd never want to be young again, because the memory of my myopia, self absorption and lack of perspective pains me.

Since I've done both, been young and been old, I think my insight might have some more merit than yours.

But hey, this is your thread, and as I recall, it was about a movie for your date and your highly intellectual movie choices and not about the merits or demerits of aging. You seem like a nice kid, and I'm sorry you're not planning on living too long. Therefore I would suggest you enjoy the movie to the maximum. You only have a few years left, afterall. :-)

20. most people generally find a way
to like who they are at any given time or age and think its best.

In the mean time, I'm trying to spare myself another one of the Big Chill remakes that come out every year.

2. MDB is categorically better, but I'd rather take a date to see Sideways
BTW, I've seen all three. And the story of Paul and his wife's marriage is a nice, sweet sub-plot to Hotel Rwanda.

Any one of them would be a very memorable date.

6. That's good to know about Hotel Rwanda
That's what I think I would most like to see. But somehow I can't see a movie about genocide setting the mood. :)

13. Thanks
We might go with Hotel Rwanda anyway, but I'm sure hearing a lot of good things about Sideways.

16. Except for that part where (spoiler!)...
this woman just beats the shit out of this guy
with a motorcycle helmet--for lying to her about
loving her and being available when he was engaged
to another. Wonder what moviegoers' reaction
would have been if a woman had told those lies to
a man and he had beat her--in the face--with a
motorcycle helmet. Oh it's just a movie.

4. Look for a rep house playing "I Spit on Your Grave" or "Gummo".
Requiem for a Dream would be good, too, as would "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer".

But, keep in mind I'm recently divorced.

11. The Aviator.
Story about Orville Wright's feud with brother Wilbur
and their drunken odyssey through the winefields of
Virginia while they invented the aeroplane, paid their way
teaching the elderly how to kickbox, and slept around
looking for love amongst the beatnik crowd. Loopy but
poignant.

18. It's not new...
but if I were you and could find a cult showing, I'd take her to see "Eraserhead." That will really impress her. ;-) Well, okay. Since you might well not have seen it, let me emphasize that I'm kidding. It's not a "get laid" movie. More than likely it would scare the shit out of you and her both. It nearly did me when I saw it years ago, and even then I considered myself a horror/psychological shocker film maven.
