Flaming arrows

How do they make those?
I've never had the opportunity to shoot a flaming arrow, but it would seem to me that the speed of the arrow would blow out the flame before it reached it's intended flammable target.

What kind of stuff do they put on the arrow?
I don't think they had napalm back then.
Buffalo grease?
Prairie dog oil?
Can you even get oil from a prairie dog?
How would you do that? Prairie dog press?

OK, have you ever shot a flaming arrow?
Did it work?
What kind of combustible substance did you use?
