I like some blues, some Jazz, some R&B... in fact, I like most of what I hear.

Hip-Hop/Rap on the otherhand, I dislike most of what I hear. It's just a genre which some people may not like, aurally. There are excdeptional rap albums, though, and I have a few (some of what's in Chuck D's list, coincidentally). But, generally, most of what I hear doesn't move me at all.

I think the fact that some people don't like "most" rap/hip-hop is because it's just such a profitble genre, that the market is flooded with tons of it, including some which is, even you must admit, just manufactured commercial crap (draw a parallel with post-Beatles Englad, or post-Nirvana Seattle.... look at all the shit knock-off bands those groups inspired).

To paraphrase from more of "Chickenshit Conformist"...

"When the thugs form bands, look who gets record deals with (LA/NY Hip-Hop) labels looking to scam, who find the most racist, queer-bashing bands they can find, to make a buck revving kids up for (self-destruction)..."

I don't know if it's accurate to state that someone doesn't like hip-hop/rap because of race issues.

I have a running war with the youth in my neighborhood.

I have lost count of all the noise complaints that I have filed with the local police.

Now, every time one of these cars stops in the neighborhood, I photograph the license plate and VIN. This information is forwarded to the police and neighborhood association.

It has helped cut down on the loud rap music significantly.

I say death to rap music in public places!

I agree about most modern rap - it's misogynistic, self-aggrandizing junk. And rude neighbors are rude neighbors, regardless of their musical preference. It's just as irritating to be woken up by music I like as music I don't.

might be more useful than castigating them, NT. I think the stereotypes about this type of music would benefit from information. Although I like dub, early rap and cross-over type hip-hop, I myself finally had to admit that there was more to Eminem than met the eye, after I heard a little of it. The sexist, violent stuff is hard to take at times, but not all of it is like that, and I suppose some of it is descriptive of how those rappers see our culture as a whole.
