My wife is leaving tonight.
And I feel kinda bummed about it.
She likes Mardi Gras parades and scrambling for all the cheap made-in-China beads and gew-gaws the float-riding krewes throw.

I just don't get it.
I finally went to my first Mardi Gras parade last year, so now I can say "been there, done that". <yawn>

I can see how little kids would like it, kinda like Halloween with free goodies and costumes and all. It's just not my idea of a fun thing to do.

Miz t. is going with some friends. These people (including Miz t.) are all in their 60s. The parade is about 30 miles away, it may be drizzling, and the temp will be in the 40s. I'd rather stay here where it's nice and warm and dry and listen to Prairie Home Companion while sucking up a few Scotches.

She says she understands, and it's OK.
They're eating out after the parade, so she's making me pimento cheese for supper, one of my favorites.

I don't think she's pissed, but I feel like a spoilsport.
Should I have sucked it up and gone with her?

1. If you're older than 19, Mardi Gras is the worst time

to go to N'awlins.

But then, if I could be 19 again, I'd go in a heartbeat.

edit: Mafdi?

3. This is in Fairhope, AL.
Small beer, compared to NOLA.
Mardi Gras celebrations actually originated in Mobile, right across the bay.

"You'd be miserable, so I'd be miserable."

6. Depends...Is everyone else going as couples and poor Miz T going stag?
If so, maybe you should have at least offered. But remember, absence really does make the heart grow fonder. Having separate experiences will give you guys something to talk about-bet she has tons of stories!

Anyway, after this many years, you'd KNOW if she really specially wanted you to be there. You must be able to read her moods and body language by now!

At least as far as I know.
She is going with a couple down the street.
Let me just say that while I like them, ain't neither one of 'em right bright, if you get my drift.
Voted for...you know.

17. She is obviously a forgiving and tolerant woman...
for putting up with them. They'll have a ball, you'll get a kick out of her stories, plus you have a quiet, scotch-drenched evening at home. What could be better?

18. She is when it comes to me.
Lady cuts me waaaay more slack than I deserve.
When it comes to politics...well...let me just say that she can carry a grudge farther than anyone else I know.
Got your e-mail. We'll make a plan.

made her miserable... you're better off not doing something you'd hate.

14. Just reassure her you will be waiting by the phone with bail money
should she and her friends get to partying too hard. Its a rotten job but somebody has to do it. You are just staying home as a safety net for her and her friends. Yeah, that's it, safety net, bail money, designated driver, hate your gonna miss all the fun but duty demands, blah, blah, blah. Kiss her good bye, wish her a happy, happy time and both of you enjoy your night. And stay by the phone.

19. One of the reasons romance doesn't last....
...is because couples think they have to MAKE each other happy...when in fact each person has to make themselves happy. Giving your wife the freedom to be happy by being okay with her going, and she giving you the freedom to stay home and enjoy yourself means you two are a very strong and happy couple. You should be proud. You love her and want her to have a great time...right? She wants the same for you. So don't sit home second guessing yourself and feeling guilty. When she gets home listen to her stories and tell her some of Garrison Keillors jokes.

21. Magnolia speaks truth.
you can't make someone happy.
You can facilitate their way to their own happiness.
Does that make sense?
Does to me, anyway.

20. Alright...I'm OK. She just came in to say goodbye.
Kissed me on top of my bald old head and said "You're not mad that I'm going are you?"
"Oh HELL no! You're not mad that I'm not, are you?"
"No. You'd hate it. I'll bring you a Moon Pie."

Am I psychic, or what?

24. She likes me a lot.
I ain't braggin', but she really really does.
Maybe because I like her right back.

Not that I'm perfect. I'm not, by a long shot. Neither is she.
But she probably comes closer than I do. By a hair.

As Bill Clinton said, "This ain't rocket science. If you like people, they'll like you back."

23. If it makes you feel any better at all -
My parents, also in their 60s, are on South Padre Island. Still, tonight, my father will be in a comfortable chair, listening to Prairie Home Companion while sucking up a Manhattan or two.

26. You don't think SHE'S pissed?
If I said I was going to Mardi Gras with some friends, I think it would be MY husband who'd be pissed. He wouldn't stop me or anything, but he'd be a bit worried about me earning beads and such.

Nah, you have every right to enjoy doing what you enjoy!

(I never got the appeal of Mardi Gras, either.)

28. Here's what happened last year:
We went.
With us was a couple who are our very best, closest friends.
We are like brothers and sisters.
When our kids were little, we named each other as guardians in case...well...whatever.
We are godparents to their kids and they are godparents to ours.

They are both physicians. Two of the most intelligent people I know.
Maybe THE most intelligent. I don't know enough about their personal finances to know if they're wealthy, or just "comfortable".
Since they're both doctors, you can draw your own conclusions.

My most vivid memory of the parade is Tish, out in the middle of the street, sometimes in danger of being run over by the next float, with her butt in the air, scrabbling for cheap trinkets. Her hand was stepped on by other revelers a few times. Not at all unusual.

I think it's a sickness.
