Damsels, has a guy ever helped you when you were in distress? |
|
My first flat tire. I had no idea what to do, so I stood there helplessly in the middle of the street. A man in a suit came bounding out of a nearby church and changed it for me. I didn't even know I had a spare tire in the car.

The way it happened- someone in a car ahead of me through a glass bottle into the street and I ran right over it, shredding the tire. It happened so fast. I didn't know how to use the jack nor was I strong enough to undo the lug nuts.
After that I practiced.

4. A group of bikers came along after I had backed my car into a ditch... |
|
and they lifted me right out... I had already called a towing service when they showed up... great guys!
(Actually it was my partner at the time who backed it into the ditch... we had seen a turtle in the middle of the road and were backing up to go save it.)

5. Yes. A flat tire on some godforsaken expressway in Georgia |
|
Not much traffic, but what there was continued to whiz past... until one kind soul stopped and changed the tire.
There have been other instances of kindness in distress, but that's the one that stands out in my memory.

Any time I've gotten a flat tire or run my wheel into a ditch, some guy was sure to appear out of nowhere to change it for me or pull me out with his pickup. Engine trouble also tends to bring them around like flies.
On the other hand, when I was pregnant and visiting my parents in the city, I *never* had a guy stand up and offer me his seat on the subway. But more than once, some non-English-speaking old grannie would poke a grandchild to give me theirs.
What I conclude from this is that the male definition of "distress" is strictly limited to guy-type problems.

Two guys dug my tiny car out of the snow after a big snowstorm. They thought it would have been easier just to pick the car up and move it! :)

8. I tried to go through a flooded street |
|
(I was young) since other cars made it through. I got stuck and started to climb out and wade out. A monster truck was coming the other way and yelled at me to stay put. He turned around and used his truck to push me out.
Another time was on a rafting trip. Again, young and stupid. We had been drinking and hit the rapids. My friend and I were both thrown out and I got caught in a whirlpool. I couldn't swim out. I stood up looking around trying to figure out how to get to shore when a raft with 6 big men told me to jump on. Normally, I wouldn't join 6 strange guys but I jumped on and they took me to shore. They sat there with me while I tried to figure out how to find my friends. Then my two male friends, my age, came up in a raft to get me. I admit, I had a momemts hesitation. I didn't want to get back on a raft with them and I felt much safer where I was. I did get on the raft and we everyone was OK.
