what is a good virus protection?

Are there any on the net that are free? I have Norton already, but I had to spend last night getting a couple viruses off my computer. I need some thing better.

I second that. Get something from Mozilla. Firefox is easy, fast, and prevents lots of problems.

11. Trend Micro nailed one a few months back while I was online....

TM runs in real time while you surf so it doesn't wait until you get a virus,or until you run a scan to find out your infected.

I can't remember what site it was,no..LOL,it wasn't some seedy porn site but TM nailed it the second it hit. I shut down the browser and had it deleted in seconds. Absolutly nill in damage done to the OS or any other file.

Since then I've also switched to Firefox for my browser,no problems at all.

13. Other security tips

A firewall is helpful, especially if you have cable or DSL connection. There are any number of inexpensive routers (even wireless) available these days. After rebate, some are as cheap as 20 bucks (US). Look in the Sunday newspaper ads. Staples in SoCal has a Belkin (good!) wireless 802.11g router for $20 right now. Firewall software is okay, but not as robust.

Don't use Microsoft Internet Explorer! It has more holes than Albert Hall. Instead, switch to an alternative. Firefox (from Mozilla) is a superior product, but straight Mozilla is good, too.

Don't use Outlook. It's lack of security has been responsible for much Net mayhem. There are numerous free options for e-mail including Thunderbird (also from Mozilla).

My opinion of Anti-virus software is that it should only be used occasionally. Norton is rubbish. Get a free alternative and run it once a week or so.

Don't run Windows! Windows has a very weak security model. There are numerous options here; the best alternative for PC hardware is undoubtedly Gnu/Linux. Alternatively, Mac OS X is also quite secure.

16. After testing a number of them I've been using Symantec/Norton.

Just my 2 cents- I've been using computers for about 20 years. I used to use McAffee but I didn't like the way they worked under the hood (might miss some things). For the last 4 or so years, I've been using Symantec/Norton AntiVirus. The others aren't bad, but Norton is so much more affordable (espeically since I need to cover more than one machine on my home network).

If you want to give them a try, you can scan your computer, free of charge...(finding link) here or (for the straight URL)

Both links above lead to the same place, where you can test your vulnerability level for BOTH viruses and online threats.

Also, nomatter which AntiVirus program you go with, be sure to also grab SpyBot Search and Destroy (you can Google it) and maybe some of the other top-rated anti-spyware programs out there like HackThis!

Though I've found Symantec doesn't catch every threat- there are like 10 new variants of Spybot a day, they are a 24 hour global operation with virus analysis going on, literally, every hour of the day in different countries. Not something you get with other places like Trend or McAffee(no AV catches everything the moment it comes out).

Nomatter what, make sure you get SOMETHING on the machine to do your AV scanning, whether you take my recommendations or not. Heartbreak is a pale word to describe what you feel when you've just lost important personal data due to a virus/spyware.

Since I started using the Opera browser, I've had no problems.

I followed the steps that I was given from norton. I also had to find the files that they were in and delete them. It was easier then I thought to go and find them, but very time consuming.

I used to mod on a security portal (you'd probably recognise the name if I mentioned it) but that's a new one on me.

Which trojan? JS/Exploit is common so it might have been that one; it's easy to embed malicious code in .html.

Where did they lodge? Did you have to delete suspect Registry keys?

Hope you stay virus-free...keeping the AV sigs up to date is important.

Just wrap your computer in a huge plastic baggie, and remove all the
wires connecting it with the outside world. It will be protected
from viruses. :-)

Firefox can help. Consider using a separate internet machine, that
is expendible, and keep the disks to rebuild the system right by to
reformat the hard drive and start over. At least your main data computers
will remain secure.
