I saw Sideways earlier tonight
and man did that movie ever suck ass!

I know a lot of people love it but pardon me for not being depressed and in the middle of a mid-life crisis. Yet another baby boomer growing older movie in the tradition of the Big Chill. Except that the Big Chill was funnier and more engaging than this.

I got some laughs out of it, but mostly chuckles here and there. The most entertaining part was a naked fat man chasing down the lead character. And believe me, I never thought I would say that full-frontal male nudity would be the highlight of any movie I've seen.

The lead character reminded me of every middle aged, annoying flake from southern California I've ever met. I'm not saying I don't like all people from California, but there's a certain type that get on my nerves. I didn't want to relate to these characters.

The other highlight was trying to annoy the woman with a giant stick up her ass in the row behind us who told my friend "this is the time to stop talking" during a PREVIEW! Do you really need to hear the preview to Hitch hikers guide to the galaxy that badly? I'm sure the movie was best suited to the tastes of pretentious middle class, middle aged white people like herself. She probably loved it. Anyway, my date and I had to joke around and talk a few times during the movie just because of the condescending and obnoxious way she had to say that. That made the movie halfway enjoyable.

1. Sideways was OK.
We go in the daytime when it's not crowded
so if some knothead sugar-tweaking teenagers
with an attention span of a gnat are jabbering
helplessly away, we can move elsewhere.

2. From watching the trailers................
it looked boring as hell. I'll wait until it's out on DVD, then if it sucks, I wouldn't have wasted $10.

3. Please, do share your reviews (I love this site):
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/

Our library uses this site to decide which popular movies we'll decide to catalog. If it doesn't get 70 percent, it's out.

I know far too many annoying people like the ones in the ads for that movie. They don't possess the natural charm of a fly, and the characters don't seem to either.

I'll pass.

14. I've seen that site before
I registered and posted my review today. I'm that annoyed at seeing the movie after all the good reviews that it motivated me to register. Thanks for the link.

4. YES!!!! Another comes out to speak the truth to the suckiness
of Sideways.

The most boring pretentious movie I have seen in many a year.

I believe we are many but because the culture snobs who pose as critics have embraced this poor excuse for a movie, perhaps people are afraid of appearing to be cretins if they don't like this movie.

9. Maybe it got great reviews from the critics
because many of the critics are depressed, divorced baby boomers trying to get their book published. To that subset of people I'm sure it is a brilliant film that resonated very well with them.

I consider myself enough of a film buff that I don't care if anyone accuses me of having bad taste just because I don't like one highly reviewed film that intellectual people are supposed to like.

7. How old are you? Is there a generation gap with this film?
The reason I ask is that I think there might be a generation gap with this movie. I'm (cough) middle-aged, and I thought the movie was hilarious, a very good movie. I suspect that there are many things in this movie that are not understandable, or do not resonate, with younger viewers. Much of the humor is derived from the pains and ills of very long-terms relationships, and from unrealized dreams in terms of careers, and making choices from what is really available to us. It is about growing up and all the tough decsions involved, with one character refusing to do so.

I also lived in California many years, around the show-biz community, and I know people likes these. And, I also have been learning a lot about wine over the past few years.

10. Yes, it is a generational thing
Which is why I mentioned the big chill, another generational movie for baby boomers about the issues that come up at that point in a person's life. I'm in my mid-20's. There were several times I noticed middle aged people cracking up at moments in the movie that I thought were only mildly amusing and worth a chuckle at best. The humor was clever and subtle, but still not all that funny.

During the movie I certainly recognized its appeal to people who could better relate to the characters. I do recommend this movie to baby boomers. Anyone else might want to wait until it comes out on DVD, or someone my age may want to wait 20 years before they see it.

On the other hand, I finally saw Easy Rider for the first time a couple months ago and loved it. That's a movie about people my age with my kind of wanderlust.

11. damn! does that mean I'm middle aged?
I'm 36 and I enjoyed it (tangentially, it was certainly better than The Aviator, which I thought was dull).

13. I was quite disappointed as well
I saw it the last night of my break and even drove to Raleigh to do so. The best grade I would give it was B- and the reviews made it sound A+. The Aviator ran circles around it.

15. I've heard mixed reviews about the aviator
Although I'm not trusting reviews for the next movie I see. I want to see Hotel Rwanda sometime this week.

19. yup
I dunno, I just found the characters to be very well developed and acted- you could argue that the plot and overall story wasn't very creative (which I can deff. see), but I still think the movie is overall brilliant because of the character interactions and situations.

hehe I'm just kidding. Yes, we look for different things in movies and obviously have different tastes. I can admit the characters were well acted, but I didn't like them. They annoyed me.

23. Actually, I like them a lot too
I loved Magnolia, Boogie Nights, and the Royal Tenenbaums. Election is one of my favorite movies, so I was hoping I would like Sideways. Maybe I was expecting too much.

24. possibly
A LOT of people have been going into the Oscar-buzz movies like "Sideways" and come out disapointed mostly due to high expectations. A few people hated "Garden State" for the same reason.
I try not to read into what critics say. I have no desire to see "The Aviator" for example- just coz it's popular and got good reviews doesn't mean I want to see it :hi:

25. well, I didn't think it sucked
but it is way over-hyped, and how on earth did Ms. Madsen gather award nominations for her role? She wasn't that good.

as the others. However, hers was the only character in the movie I really liked.
