GRRRR, When It Rains, it Frickin' Pours
First, on Friday, my brakes on my car (rear right in particular) die. The freakin calipers freeze which destroys the pads and rotors, so I have to get that fixed on Monday (will cost $700 minimum). THEN, I get home that night thinking I'll be able to get some work done that I couldn't during the day, but NOOOOOOOO, my computer at home dies (and no, it's not a problem with Windows, so keep your BS Linux/Mac/anything else recommendations, I don't need 'em and they won't help here). The motherboard has died and taken the CPU with it somehow, sooooo, I need to order another motherboard and processor on Monday too, so there goes another $300 minimum.

That's leaving out the hours I put in yesterday tryin to resurrect the dead PC by swapping in spare parts and stuff I have, but to no avail.

What a wasted weekend, and a thousand bucks or more down the tubes in just a few days. (Or really, one day, since it all started on Friday).

SHIT.

1. Yikes... I hope next week turns out better for you...
I spilled water on my laptop keyboard last week on a friday afternoon (while I was telecommuting)... couldn't log on again until I let it dry out... prompted me to buy a backup computer... there went $1,800... but I LOVE my new laptop... and now I have two. (Almost) always a silver lining. :)

3. Yeah, I guess . . .
silver lines do exist. I'll probably upgrade to an Athlon64 as a result. The clock speed will be a little slower, but actual speed will be increased thanks to 64-bit processing.

The car is the one that bugs me though :(.

9. Yup, I'm actually ordering an Epox board that has 4 DDR slots too
that way I can use the gig I have now and add another gig later (probably the same time the 64-bit version of XP comes out.

10. 4 is hard to find these days, it pisses me off
btw, a rotor shouldn't cost more than 120, pads the usual price, calipers are incredibly strong and shouldn't need replacing.

700 seems high

12. It's the caliper that caused the problem.
The caliper locked up meaning that that rear-right brake was always on. So, have to replace the caliper to fix the problem.

Epox boards frequently have 4 RAM slots, at least since the Athlon XP chips came out 3 or 4 years ago. I've had several (with an Abit or Asus board once in a while), but Epox are the only ones that had 4 RAM slots, except for a Shuttle board I had for a while.

2. friday was a bad day all around...
took LittleBit, my tiny 7 year old middle cat to the vet to see why her appetite was gone. Thought she had a bug, turned out her entire abdominal cavity was so filled with tumors that there was no room for food.... friday was a very bad day. My tiny LittleBit - all 5 pounds of her, had to be put to sleep.

8. Get a second opinion on the brake job
Edited on Sun Jan-30-05 11:22 AM by Droopy
Go somewhere else and tell them you got a $700 estimate from somebody. I'm betting you can get it done a lot cheaper. To give you an idea, I replaced my front brake pads on both sides for $15. I know a caliper and a rotor are going to be more expenseive, but it doesn't seem like they should be $700 more enxpensive. If you took your car to a dealer, try taking it to an independent mechanic for another estimate.

11. Caliper - $200, Rotor - $75-100, Pads, $60
Will probably go ahead and replace both rear rotors so add another $75-100.

Labor ain't cheap. It'll probably be less than $700, but I say $700 to leave room for unforseen problems.

15. Hehehe, I was about ready to string them up by their toes last night
they kept jumping inside the computer case while I was working on it :)

But they kept purring at me and licking my fingers, so I let 'em get away with it.

Thanks Bertha :)

sounds like they know you pretty well. They know you're upset and are trying to comfort you. Pets are just amazing. :D
