Anybody else have problems sleeping because of |
|
what I call "noisy head". Sometimes I get a song in my head or some other bullshit, and my mind goes about 80 mph, and all I want to do is sleep, but I can't. Tonight has been a good example.
Argh.

For some reason this would help sometimes.
Yeah, I always have a song in my head.

but the other noisy song that is good when you are driving, but not good when you are trying to sleep pops back in my head.

I hope you are able to rest well. It doesn't bug me that often to be anything but a nuisance, but I imagine it would be difficult to have it go on all the time.

I used to work a night shift, so it used to happen more often it seemed. I wonder sometimes if it may be related to hormonal shifts or something...lol.

I have a hyperactive mind. The only thing that slows it is classical music (Bach especially, and Chopin), milk, booze, or as I have more recently discovered, pot. Sometimes I think it's not normal to be unable to "shut" the mind up.

I have trouble getting to sleep more often than not. Argh!! And I do think some of it is related to "hormonal shifts" like you said. There are really good medications to help you sleep - you might want to ask your doctor. And you also might want to make sure that you're not anxious or depressed. But barring those problems, here are some suggestions: Learn to meditate. Learn progressive relaxation. Read "The Relaxation Response" by Herbert Benson. Try a white noise machine by your bed. Read an incredibly boring and/or difficult to comprehend book (philosophy and quantum physics work for me - but, hey, we're all different) Get some sunlight and exercise during the day. Write down all of your concerns before you go to bed, and assign a time during the day to deal with/mull over the problems, so that you're not working on them at night. Stop trying to go to sleep. If nothing happens after 15 minutes, get up, read a really boring book until it's putting you to sleep. And don't keep checking the clock while you're doing this. It will make you more tense and worried.

24. Use a 'white noise' machine (nature sounds), or take some Melatonin... |
|
or drink some warm milk, or an Excedrin PM. Any of the above should 'sedate' your mind enough to not listen to all the thoughts... long enough to go to sleep.

28. Another fellow with the same problem. |

If it happens occasionally, a couple of times a month maybe, then buy some books on self hypnosis or relaxation techniques -- they can really work well.
If your like me and have had the problem forever, and every day, I would definately recommend seeing a sleep psychologist, along with the psychiatrist he recommends (or other sleep doctor).
I have used a lot of behavioral techniques that have helped significantly. In addition, I use a micro dose of serequel on occasion. For me, although it doesn't make me sleepy, it "shuts the mind off" and I can go to sleep easily.
My life has improved dramatically since implementing these things.

What I do now, that seems to help a little is I have a sound machine that mimics the sound of the ocean. I can think of the beach or some wonderful tropical spot and it usually puts me out.
