Care to Play "MISCASTING DIRECTOR"?
Al Pacino's performance as Michael Corleone in the first Godfather film is one of the indelible actor/role associations in American cinema history. Still, before Pacino landed it, studio executives actually pressured to cast either Robert Redford or Ryan O'Neill in the part.

Ryan O'Neill as Michael Corleone. The mind reels.

Let's make our minds reel some more...

Rules of "Miscasting Director": Take a film role that was unforgettably performed by one actor and substitute a different actor whose qualifications to perform the same role are somewhat dubious. Some examples:

Tom Hanks as Hannibal Lecter
Keanu Reeves as Special Agent Joe Pistone (Donnie Brasco)
Julia Roberts as Karen Hill (Goodfellas)

The only limit to this game is one's one warped imagination. Speaking of which, how about an Ed Wood with Tom Cruise in the title role opposite Clint Eastwood as Bela Lugosi? OUCH!!!

Any other "miscasting directors" out there?

41. Julia Roberts as Arwen (LOTR)
I heard that Liv Tyler was added to the cast for "box office" appeal--not selected by PJ, et al. Casting for the films was mostly excellent & she was not my fave. But she really worked hard at the role.

Remembering Julia's turn as Kitty Kiernan (in Michael Collins), I'm quite grateful that PJ could not afford "big stars" like her.

47. The Seinfeld cast in LOTR
We did this same topic a few weeks ago, and had some hilarious Seinfeld/LOTR situations!

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=105&topic_id=2486285#2486625

George as Sam would say, "We're lost! We should quit! I'm a quitter! I come from a long line of quitters! I was raised to give up!"

Seinfeld as Frodo: "You know, you're right. My feet are tired. I mean, really - who goes on quests any more? What's up with that?Saving the world - who am I, the Messiah? No, I'm a guy that likes to sit around a lot and come up with funny stuff. That's me. I'm not a quester."

George as Sam: "You're definitely NOT a quester. No one's a quester. Who was the last quester? Ulysses?"

Seinfeld as Frodo: "Exactly. No one quests any more."

George as Sam: "Let's get some coffee."

Seinfeld as Frodo: "You know, you're absolutely right. If they want the ring destroyed, they should have thought of it that before they made it. It's not my responsibility. Was I there? No, I wasn't." (throws ring on ground).

George: "You were DEFINITELY not there. Not AT ALL!"

48. The threads I miss by never being online during weekends...
...I just re-listened to the commentary track on my DVD copy of the Godfather and the stuff I heard about Robert Redford/Ryan O'Neill for Al Pacino's role on it made me want to do this thread.

Sorry, if I had known it was already done (and only about a week ago, at that) I wouldn't have started this.

85. Tom Cruise in a remake of "Marty."
Paired with Catherine Zeta-Jones or Cameron Diaz as Clara.

Cruise's ego is big enough that he would try that. He actually wanted to do "In the Line of Fire," but that would have been daft. The main character is guilt-ridden because he couldn't save JFK.

On the other hand, speaking of stupid ideas, the lead character in "The Bodyguard" felt guilty because he didn't stop Ronald Reagan from being shot. "No, no, you idiot," I wanted to scream, "It's James Brady you should feel sorry for."

100. And Mickey Rourke was set to be in it before Stallone, apparently...
Edited on Mon Jan-31-05 03:28 PM by Crankie Avalon
"...the script attracted the attention of actor Mickey Rourke who was interested in playing the central character. He ordered rewrites and then left the project after he lost interest.

Enter action hero Sylvester Stallone. Stallone himself then rewrote the script and removed the humor as he was only interested in playing a straight faced cop with an exotic gun. Finally after losing interest himself (Stallone would go on to use some of his story ideas in "Cobra") the project attracted yet another writer in the shape of Chip Proser, who would later pen the producers' smash hit "Top Gun".

Finally, Eddie Murphy, having just had two big hits in the shape of "Trading Places" and "48 Hrs" entered the scene cast as the now re-named "Axel Foley"."
