6. I haven't seen it but read a review with a spoiler so I know
what happens. It wasn't a very favorable review but I will still see it because I like to see all the movies that are up for oscars and I don't let reviews dictate what I see. DUers seem to like it so far...

7. I never let reviews dictate what I see
I like to see the Oscar nominees, too - but somehow I'm not that interested in seeing "The Aviator." Don't know why.

10. Aviator Is Great Too....It's Between Those Two....
Aviator is an epic, big picture, big bucks...Million Dollar baby is smaller but more emotionally powerful...

I am torn between the two...

19. Sideways was a great actor/actress movie but not best picture quality
Personally I think Giamatti should have received a Best Actor nomination and felt that he was more deserving than Clint Eastwood (who was good but not top 5). But I think Sideways is going to pull awards for Thomas Haden Church and Virginia Madsen. And maybe one of the script awards to boot.

21. Whereas I agree that Giamatti probably deserved a nom,
I don't think the supporting characters will take the awards.

And I also firmly believe that Jim Carrey was left out too for Eternal Sunshine. Hollywood just will not accept him as a dramatic actor.

But then again, this year is a tough year for the men. It is definitely the men's year for acting. Superior performances all around.

24. What I find amazing is this....

Jamie Foxx spent his early years on "In Living Color" doing character parts. Don't get me wrong - he truly deserves an Oscar this year, but I'm shameful how Carrey gets overlooked too.

..and ironically I'm neither a big fan of Clint Eastwood or Hilary Swank. But Morgan Freeman can reel me in to any picture he's doing!

9. Saw It Also & Agree. However Limbaugh is blasting it for the
assisted sucide part along with other conservatives. One conservative wacko called it a left wing propaganda movie for assisted sucide. If I remember correctly, Eastwood won Mayor of Carmel on a Republican ticket.

29. Groups Criticize 'Baby' for Message on Suicide
By SHARON WAXMAN Published: January 31, 2005

When the Clint Eastwood film "Million Dollar Baby" came out last month, critics praised the film for its subtle power, moving performances and the quiet confidence of its director. But not wanting to give away its ending, few mentioned that a controversial social issue was buried in its plot.

But now that it has been nominated for seven Oscars, social activists and conservative commentators have emerged to criticize the film, which they say sends a message advocating assisted suicide.

Defenders of the film say its intention is not to make a broad political statement, and that it is the filmmakers' right to tell the story he or she chooses. (Those who have not seen the movie and do not wish to know the plot may not want to read further.)

The movie is not principally about assisted suicide and euthanasia. "Million Dollar Baby" tells the story of a young woman (Hilary Swank) who strives to be a champion boxer, being groomed by a crusty old trainer, played by Mr. Eastwood.

http://movies.nytimes.com/pages/movies/index.html

But when her character is badly injured and paralyzed, Mr. Eastwood's character must decide whether to help her die, and ultimately - despite the urging of a priest to do otherwise - does so.

30. Rush is such an freakin' asshole...
A movie about one person helping another person find relief from pain is bad...but I'll bet a war movie in which a thousand people are mowed down with a machine gun would be fine with him.

Dipshit drug addict hypocrite...

12. I hope it wins all the areas it is nominated in.
However, I have read that Bening will get it because "she made a good boy out of Warren Beaty" even though clearly Swank acted rings around her. And I don't care for DeCaprio.

18. Why would Annette win because of that
She already had 2 of his kids (and was pregnant with a 3rd) when she first went up against Swank back in 2000. I still personally think Annette did a better job as the frustrated Housewife in American Beauty vs. Hilary Swanks White Trash transgender role in "Boys Don't Cry" but that's just me. I always thought Swank's win was deserving but a flook since let's face it - she came via Beverly Hills 90210 and a couple of other 3rd rate TV shows.

But if Hilary pulls of this win it'll truly bump her up there as one of the best thirty-something actresses in the business. She may never make the money that a Roberts, Diaz or Zeta-Jones might make but if you have Hils in your movie there's a chance you're going to have a top rated film

22. I think some in the Academy want to reward Bening
Because she didn't win for "American Beauty." Kinda like Denzel winning for "Training Day" when his performance in "The Hurricane" was allegedly far superior (I didn't see it, so I can't comment).

27. The Academy oftens votes to correct past mistakes
I agree about Denzel winning for Training Day when he should have won for The Hurricane. I think they got it flipped. Denzel should have won for the Hurricane in 2000, but Russell Crowe got it for Gladitor. Russell Crowe should have won in 2001 for A Beautiful Mind, but the Academy corrected itself and gave it to Denzel.

That's just my opinion.

15. I saw this and Sideways yesterday
Edited on Mon Jan-31-05 03:20 PM by RubyDuby in GA
I LOVED everything about MDB. I too bawled my eyes out. I had no warning what was going to happen so I didn't have any tissue with me, just very rough movie napkins. God what a movie. If Swank doesn't take home # 2 for this, I will take to the streets of Hollywood to protest. And I'm all about Morgan Freeman getting Supporting Actor.

As for Sideways, I seem to be one of the two people on this planet that thought it absolutely sucked. I hated everything about it. I thought it had maybe 3 funny moments and that was it. And I even hated the way it was shot. I can't wait to get my critic job....

Edit: This completes the Best Pic noms for me. I'm calling it for MDB. And Eastwood just won the Director's Guild Award. I feel bad for Martin "Susan Lucci of the Oscars" Scorscee, but c'mon Avaitor isn't as good as MDB.

20. I agree, RubyDuby
MDB is good on so many levels. The Aviator is long, boring and uninspiring. Sideways was cute, but Hotel Rwanda should have nommed in its place.

I'm seeing Ray tomorrow when it comes out on DVD, but I suspect I'll still be cheering for Million Dollar Baby to win Best Pic.

But I must warn you guys and gals. I have had many a perfect year before. Can I just say thank god there's no LOTR this year?!?!? No offense to the fans, but seriously the third installment alone was not better than Mystic River or Master and Commander! Argue all you want, but you know I'm right.
