I am officially unemployed (again!)................................
Edited on Mon Jan-31-05 04:28 PM by CrownPrinceBandar
Gah! And I thought that 2005 was gonna be my year!

After 6 months of furtive employment, the archaeological well has run dry and I'm on the dole again. I went to the local unemployment office and I was told that my weekly disbursement would be a miserly $112.00/week! The job I was working on here in town will hopefully restart whenever the weather breaks, and that should net me a few weeks of employment.

Note to parents: If your kid wants to be a professional archaeologist here in the US, please urge them into law or medical school. IMHO, sporadic employment and a gypsy lifestyle is no way to live.

On an ironic note, it seems my local office of unemployment is having their own employment pains. The lady I talked to said that they had only 3 people doing the work of an office of 7 - 8 people, and when I offered my services to take up the slack, she said no-can-do, because there is a hiring freeze here in WV for many state offices and under-staffing is the norm, mostly thanks to the Bush economy.

Now where are those classifieds?

6. Sorry to hear about that...
That sucks for you.

And, I am very nervous now for my 12 yr old son. Since kindergarten, this is what he's wanted to do. We have the rock and fossil collections to prove it. :-) Currently he is in a magnet middle school studying environmental and earth science.

What else can you do with an archeology degree?

Thanks,
Debbi

7. Environmental policy and science is pretty good right now........
Edited on Mon Jan-31-05 05:17 PM by CrownPrinceBandar
as far as jobs go. A friend of mine just got a nice job in Farquar County (sp?) VA with her masters in environmental policy.

If your son collects rocks and fossils, his interest is paleontology, a field I cannot comment on. But my general suggestion is to stay involved with what he is interested in and plan for future employment when he gets to college. Archeology is not a bad field of study (I love it), its just that opportunities are limited unless you are very motivated and/or very lucky.

13. I hate it when that happens
Political organizers sometimes have a similar gypsy lifestyle of sporadic employment. Good luck finding a good job doing something you love.
