We met in that capacity.

6. No Shit?
Interesting...That's an odd couple then...What was she like? You'd think the dev. dir. for NEA would have some liberal leanings, no? Or is she there to help destroy it?

11. She's not there to destroy it.
Not from what I could tell.

There were two people from the NEA there, and both are very enthusiastic about arts education and extending the reach and impact of the arts to every citizen.

One program in particular really blew my mind. It's called Operation Homecoming:

The National Endowment for the Arts created Operation Homecoming to help U.S. troops and their families write about their wartime experiences. Their letters, poems, stories, and memoirs will be collected into a national archive, and the best submissions will be published in a literary anthology.

Tobias Wolff, Tom Clancy, James McBride and others are involved in the workshops.

I think that's really an amazing program...

7. Are you talking about the National Endowment for the Arts?
Shit, that's a job I want to have eventually. I had no idea I had such terrible people ahead of me.

8. I'll tell you what - I went in there expecting to hate her, but couldn't.
She's bright and charming and really committed to the arts. Very little ego at all - really about finding strategic partnerships to promote the great work they're doing.

I actually liked her. Who would have thunk it?

9. I don't.
I feel - I dunno - maybe more hopeful?

If you can make ANY kind of assumption about a person based on their spouse - and I'm not saying you always can - but if you were judge Alberto at all by his wife, well then maybe he's not as bad as I thought.

So not oogie, just confused. Finding myself respecting the Attorney General and that kind of makes my head spin.

10. I experience that from time to time meeting some Bushies.
There are two women I know who are just as charming and smart as can be, but they voted for and deeply adore/love/whatever Bush.

Does not compute. Makes my head hurt.

I do think it's good though--helps us to remember that Republicans are people too.

15. You're right
But I guess I had decided that AG was pure evil. This has made me realize that I need to do some more reading before I form such rigid opinions. When I googled his wife, I found some very humanizing quotes. And even the repubs in DC aren't sure about AG - they're afraid they'll end up with another Souter on their hands.
