I cannot find Mr. Merlin anywhere. He's an indoor cat who always comes when I call him. There's no chance he could have gotten out, he would have stepped on my foot and I would have noticed. Any ideas?

My cat actually hid in his cat carrier once. He hates that thing but it seemed he knew I'd never look there.

4. one of mine likes to lay on the duct work in the basement
another sleeps in the bathtub. One of mine was sleeping right on my monitor for a while. I didn't think it was good for him so I finally broke down and bought a flat screen so he couldn't.

Sometimes one of mine also gets closed off in a room with the door shut. I didn't know where my Mac was this morning, didn't come down for breakfast, but when I got home from taking my son to school he was at the door and ready to go out. I figured they had a cat party last night and slept in late this morning. I wouldn't worry too much about your cat he'll show up when he's ready.

:)

On edit:

I didn't see the part about him being more lethargic than usual, etc. Keep looking he's around somwhere. Quinn will disappear like that and even opening a can of food doesn't bring him out. . . then, all of a sudden he'll just appear out of nowhere.

I hope he's okay, keep calling him and shaking the treats :)

Take each room one section at a time, and search any space he could possibly have gotten into, including ones you might think are too small for him to fit. Check all cabinets, behind/under all furniture and appliances and ON TOP of everything too.

Good luck, and let us know when you find him.

33. Checked the closets?
Whenever one of our cats goes missing, my first instinct is to panic. Then I generally open up my clothing closet, and lo and behold, the cat is ususally tucked into a sweater or pair of pants at the far end of the closet.
Perhaps your kitty can't hear you calling.

36. Kitchen cupboards...
That's where our "big boy" (okay, only 13 pounds, but big in comparison to the little girl of 5.5 pounds) hides. He gets in the bottom cupboard and hides behind the turkey roaster (or in it). Usually, he can get the door open from the outside, but then can't get it open from the inside.

He does this a couple of times a year, and once he got in the cupboards and then slinked his way back behind the kitchen drawers.

Good luck, and I hope you find him in good health.

She has this ability to hold completely still for the longest time. I can't tell you how many times I went through the house calling her name looking in every corner of the house. Eventually I would find her in a place like the shelving unit, sitting amongst the knick knacks. She would be so still she would blend in with the decor. LOL

Hope you find your kitty soon.

Edited on Mon Mar-14-05 03:32 PM by Pawel K
There is a chance one of your mattresses, foundations, or couches has a whole in it and he climbed in there. I had to seal all of these at my house as that was my cats favorite spot.

Best of luck in finding him.

57. One time my 15-lb beige tabby got himself hidden...
...inside one of those folding couch/bed things. We had weekend guests, and my friend had folded up the bed without noticing he'd been hiding in the gap and shut him up in it.

He wasn't all that traumatized. It wasn't until a few hours later she was sitting on the couch reading when she heard this muffled meowing and it took her a while to figure out where it was coming from. She said when she pulled the frame back up he seemed very relaxed and not in that big a hurry to leave.

54. *****UPDATE***** Merlin found...or rather he found me.
He hobbled out of where ever he was about 20 minutes ago. It looks like he has hurt his front paw somehow. I am guessing he tried counter surfing last night, and landed badly on it. He doesn't realize he's not young and spry anymore. I still have no idea where he hid out, as I've ripped the house apart.

Thanks so much everyone for your ideas on where to look. Now I just hope he hasn't hurt himself too badly.

67. Any idea where he went?
Here's my theory (also posted on another thread): When cats disappear like that, they actually just sneak into another dimension or universe. That's the only plausible explanation. One of mine pulled that stunt a few months ago -- I looked under and behind all the furniture, in every closet, cupboard and drawer: I called him and rattled a cat food box; I looked outside and on the roof -- and after about an hour, when I was getting really concerned, I turned around and there he was. He just looked at me and said "Meow?" like "Hey, whassup?" It was like he'd materialized out of nowhere. So I think he was hanging out in another dimension for awhile.  And so, probably, was Mr. Merlin.

I'm glad you found him and I'm sure he's fine. My brother and I once tore my dad and stepmom's house apart looking for Miss Thang. We were having a complete meltdown thinking we'd somehow let her out accidently.

The entire time, she's in her usual hiding place up under the china cabinet, laughing at us the entire time.

75. Poor baby! I'm glad he's alright.
I'll bet he took a fall and went off to nurse his paw and his dignity.

77. But he hid in another dimension.
The ability of cats to slip through small tears in the space-time continuum makes them occasionally frustrating to deal with.

78. He's been found. Thanks! My father in law (who has since died) used
to feed him whatever he was having, and try as we might, he just doesn't lose much weight. :hi:

79. I was going to tell you to flush the toilet; that used to be the only
way I could find Atlas when he was "lost". That cat could not resist a flushing toilet no matter how badly he wanted to hide out.

But now I see you and Merlin are reunited. How was his trip to the parallel universe that only cats cat access?

I am absolutely certain that mine slip into little pockets in the Mobius continuem. Either that or they have secret teleporters ala "beam me up Scotty"

Glad he decided to show up.

80. He seems no worse for wear, except for the paw.
:) Jessie (our sheltie) is the keeper of the toilet in our house. She goes nuts.

I have to agree with you that somehow our cats dissolve into thin air (and that's a task with Merlin) only to return when they dang well want to. :)

81. Probably Found A Closet or Something
Something falls on the floor of a closet he can get into. He knows that's new. Lays down on it, placing his claim to it.

Also, make sure he's not in a closed closet. We once had a cat spend almost a day and half in a closet because she jumped onto a lower shelf while the door was open. But, she must have liked it for a long time. We heard her the next afternoon crying to get out. We would have heard her if she had been crying the night before or the next morning. She apparently was ok being in the new place in the dark for over one whole day. Then she figured that was enough.

82. I truly believe he got zapped into another dimension. I checked all the
closets, the drop ceiling in the basement, every cardboard box we have. It was crazy...and then he comes hobbling out like, "What?" ;)

83. Yes they do hide well!
Edited on Tue Mar-15-05 09:00 AM by demnan
I had one that slipped into the box spring of my bed. I didn't know there was a tear in the bottom of it. I was so worried about him for hours, and he'd made a little fun hammock for himself!

Lily hides in the very back of the closet, usually behind a box where you wouldn't think a rather large cat could slip in.

Pad Thai rarely hides, he just gets under the covers.

I'm glad your kitty is safe. Many kisses to the hurt paw!

84. Merlin's Brother (R.I.P. Sweetie-we thought he was a she) used to rip
holes in the bottom of box springs and hide up there. Merlin is a "lurker". He can lurk so quietly, right in front of you, that you don't even know he's there...even in all his pudginess. :hi:

Oh, they'll do that. I would blame alien abduction! Yeah, that's gotta be it.
