6. I voted for Brett Butler, simply because she's next to Margaret Cho |
|
and Margaret Cho, like a lot of other stuff rated on DU, is overhyped as fuck.

8. I'm surprised Ellen is so far ahead. |
|
I like her, but she reminds me of a female Bob Newhart. And I love Bob Newhart, but I guess I like humor that's a bit more - "edgy".

12. To be honest, I don't think any of these women are all that funny... |
|
...and I can't think of many funny male "stand-ups," either.
I find most "stand-up comedy" pretty lame and am more amused by comic acting that is part of a bigger story rather than someone just standing and trying to tell isolated jokes. Like what goes on in Ed Wood or The Big Lebowski, say.
Just my opinion...I think most other people like stand-up a lot.

20. Don't know who Mitch Hedburg is... |
|
...but I went to college in Boston in the late 80s so I was pretty familiar with Steven Wright.
I bought all of Richard Pryor's old stand-up albums when I was a kid, and I remember seeing Dave Chappelle on a HBO Young Comedians Special before he was anybody and being really impressed with him and wondering if he would go on to become a star.
On the other end of the spectrum, I've tried sitting through that "Last Comic Standing" and oooof, was that ever unfunny!
To me, most stand-ups are closer to the mediocre "Last Comic Standing" level than to the more exceptional Richard Pryor or Dave Chappelle one.

19. I think she caters a wee bit too much to her GLBT fan base. |
|
I like that part of her humor too, but I wish she would balance it out a bit more with more universal stuff. I love the stuff she does about her mom. Reminds me of my Japanese wife's relatives & late mother. People may take it for broad ethnic humor, but anyone with an Asian mom knows that her portrayal is very close to home.

I don't know if she's been shown at all in America, but she's excellent; dripping in sarcasm and wit (mostly directed against us males). There's information on some of her shows on the B.B.C. web-site: http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/guide/talent/b/brand_jo.shtml

But really, she was never a standup comic. She started out as a performance artist who happened to be very funny and went into movies and TV from there.
